Prediabetes

Hi I have just been advised by my GP that I am prediabetic and my cholesterol level is also higher than it should be. I have gone into a bit of a panic and seem to be spending hours in supermarkets reading food labels and not knowing what to buy for the best. Things are either high in sat fat if not they are high in sugar. I work full time and lunch time has become a nightmare as to what to eat that can be easily done in the work place. Any ideas would be most appreciated.

Hi @pixieb and welcome to the forum. You are fortunate (in a way) to have found out you are pre-diabetic before you become fully diabetic. You still have time to lower your blood sugar levels and avoid crossing the threshold.
Apart from looking at the sugar levels in foods you should also check the amount of carbohydrates. carbs turn to sugar in our bodies so aren't good for diabetics or pre-diabetics. A carb content of less than 10 grams per 100g is good, and less than 5g carbs per 100g is best.
A lot of us on here follow a Low Carbohydrate High Fat approach to eating which has lowered our blood glucose levels effectively.
Have a read round the threads and ask anything you want to. The people on here are friendly and supportive, and will help you with any advice you need.

I am in the same shoes. Exactly like you. I am now 2 weeks on low carb diet. And it is so hard to find balance between cholesterol and low carb diet. I have decided to ignore the Cholesterol within limits. I am not sure if that is OK, but I avoid obvious fat on foods, and try to cook food so if there is any fat it should be out, but also use less fat when cooking. Not too sure what else I can do.
I eat fish, chicken, cooked red meats without fats but not too often.
rosted chicken can be good for lunch without any bread with non starchy vegetables as a filler, and I have lots of cucumber and feta as snacks and some meat or egg..
I also try to eat lots of small meals during the day. But I have just started so not too sure what to do.
And I test before and after new meals plus every morning to see how foods affect me. I am still prediabetic but knowing that D is a progressive disease, I try to stay within the limits of a normal people in order to slow the progression and avoid future complications.
Another most important thing for me is exercise. I found by measuring that 5 min of exercise after food drops my BG (measured before and after exercise) frops it by 20 popints, so Now I exercise after every meal for 5 min on a machine.
