Hi
I have been a chronic asthmatic for nearly 30 years, I have taken oral steroids non stop for 5 years, the asthma is still not controlled all that well and eventually the steroids led to diabetes. I have taken Glimepiride for a few years and have not really ever had many problems with my blood sugars / diabetes until a recent hospital admission for my asthma. I was held 'prisoner' for 22 days on 60mg of prednisolone.During this time my blood sugar was all over the place ranging for 2.8 to 26.6 with any 24 hour period. I suffered from dizzy spells, sweats, headaches, light headedness etc.
My diet has not changed but during the hospital admission and since my release my exercise levels have dropped (due to the asthma). I have been home for 2 weeks and still on 40mg of prednisolone. My Asthma consultant has said that I now have small airways disease and she wants me to stay on high levels of prednisolone but the choice is upto me as the side effects won't be good (including the diabetes).
Since I got home from hospital the blood sugars have got worse, all over the place and me suffering what I would describe as hypos on virtually a daily basis. Usually glucose tablets and drinks do help but not always. This is really getting to me now, I saw my GP on Friday who wasn't much use apart from arranging blood tests and sending me to the diabetes nurse who is fully booked until April, as is my asthma consultant.
Anybody else struggling with preds and diabetes or any help or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

hey Yorkieiron
Just input a search for steroids and found you. I too am a long term chronic asthmatic and 9 years ago was diagnosed with T2. Am in bed tonight browsing forums as suffering from flu( so much for the jab!) and a chest infection. Today I started a course of prenisolone and like you found that I have no control over sugars which are now sky high. GP warned this was possible consequence but said as on max dose of metformin nothing could be done. Just wondering how you are doing now?
