Private health insurance diabetes cover

Hello,

I have history of type 2 diabetes in my family, and I believe I have far above average chances to get diabetes myself. I am doing all the checks and everything is fine, but let's be realistic, possibility is always there.

Because of my genetic predispositions, I started thinking about getting private health insurance which would also cover diabetes, but I wasn't able to find any. Basically, all of them say that chronic diseases are not covered.

This being said, does anyone know is there any benefit to being privately insured before getting diabetes? For example, would it be possible to request cover for CGMs or pumps if you had private cover before getting diabetes?

Thank you!

Miklos

To be honest, much depends where you are (UK or overseas), how you intend to achieve this cover (individually or through an employer scheme), and to a large extent how deep the premium payers pockets are.

There are a great many scheme options out there. Almost none I know of provide cover for chronic conditions, although some employer based schemes (as they are costed differently) have a bit more leeway.

To be honest, if you are a true risk, it might make more sense to rad up on what, if any, preventative measures you might have at your disposal, and put those into play, rather than pay for something that might happen, then find your cover is scant, if it exists a thread all for your condition.

(I used to work for a large insurer, with a medical insurance subsidiary, in actuarial pricing, so I have a bit of a handle on how these things hang together.)

Thank you for quick answer!

I am UK resident (moved here 3 years ago), registered with GP and didn't have problems so far.

I am taking good care of my health, but I would still like to have peace of mind, especially because I own my company (6 employees) so I am not covered by employer's insurance.

Do you have any specific companies/policies I should look into? Also, what is the actual cost of diabetes to someone in UK, what does/doesn't NHS cover and what could be the potential benefit of having private health insurance which covers diabetes?

I understand you very well because I feel the same. I already began to look for companies that provide health insurance that can cover diabetes.

Where are you based Utop1st? In UK, medical insurances do not cover chronic conditions. Aspects could be covered, say, around a diagnosis, but bearing in mind in UK people living with diabetes are charges for their medications, there is a limited need for private cover.

Type 2s, managing their condition with diet only are not exempt from prescription charges.

I would guess that if there is only a ‘history’ in the family that if you remain aware of this eat and live well then the chances of getting it are reduced and even if you do you could probably remain on diet tablet control

Having said that T1 and T2 seem to get treated very differently in the UK with T2 it’s more a case of annual appointment with advice and sent away to take whatever meds they prescribe
