Hi couple of questions. I receive private healthcare through Vitality with work. I have had numerous sort of sport injury usage etc with them and always state my type 1 diabetes.
I am interested if anyone has ever taken out private healthcare personally with the pre existing condition of type 1 diabetes and if so what sort of percentage increase on the premiums did you get charged.
I imagine its pretty costly?

On a similar note has anyone ever moved to a new country like the USA with a pre existing type 1 condition and how expensive was health insurance there etc.

Many thanks in advance.

Most (if not all) private healthcare companies won't insure you for pre-existing conditions @holdem
I've no experience of moving countries, but if you use the search button, others have asked both your questions.

Usually, private health care cover in the UK has been covered by my employer.
When I took out BUPA for myself, this was more expensive because the risk was not spread amongst my work colleagues. However, as it does not cover pre-existing conditions, my diabetes did not have any impact.
More important was whether I had cancer which was covered.

ok thanks both for your answers.
I appreciate it.

good to know you can get a policy excluding diabetes.

I don't think you will find and insurer who would include long term diabetes cover, although most would cover it for a period if it was diagnosed during the period of the policy.

If you are looking at taking a policy out for yourself (moving employer, for example), please do read the long term conditions and related conditions wording carefully.

@holdem There are private healthcare groups (in Canada, I would think you can get the same in the US) that will cover pre-existing conditions, but the coverage is significantly reduced across all categories. I have two health plans with the same company. The first is a ‘group insurance plan‘ from work. I am now retired, but I still get it as a taxable benefit. There are however significant limits set on coverage. The second policy is called an individual policy. Again I chose a plan that covered pre-existing conditions. There are limits to this one too . I pay around $160 per month for it. It covers the usual like drugs , limited hospital stays , dental . There are of course upper limits, and these will be significantly lower than plans that exclude pre-existing conditions. My individual plan has better coverage than my group plan. I keep the group plan because I pay next to nothing for it.
In Canada , outside of the private health plans, Provincial Health care plans will cover insulin. This is something the government has implemented during this parliament. So if you have legal status in Canada then you would be covered for insulin, I believe.
I don’t know if anyone from the US wants to chip in.
Edited to tag the OP.
