Hoping someone can help me. I am a type 1 diabetic and a climber and recently my climbing has hit a wall (no pun intended). I have been training in the gym pretty hard and was wondering if anyone could tell me the rules on taking protein (bars, shakes) as a diabetic. are tgey ok to have? I got my hba1c from 11 to 6 and dont want to go back so im being careful.
All the bars and shakes on the market tend to have a lot of carbs as well so check the nutrition label. People doing strength training often over estimate the amount of extra protein they need as there is a limit to how much muscle mass you can add per day. If you are getting 1.0 to 1.5 g/kg/day (per kg of your weight) that is plenty. Normal requirements are only 0.7 to 1.0 g/kg/day.
If you have a normal carb rich diet you should not need any insulin for the protein, but if you find your blood sugar rising after a protein heavy meal you are probably converting some of the excess protein to glucose via gluconeogenesis. In this case start by dosing insulin as if for 25% of the protein as if it were carbs. Adjust upward until you find your personal protein ratio, but be aware this can vary from day to day if there are changes in your macronutrient ratio (fat/carb/protein) and your muscle protein growth requirements.
