Hi all.
I'm looking for information on type 1 diabetes and driving licences.
Does being insulin dependent automatically lead to having a restricted licence?
Can you avoid this and if so, how?
If your job depends on having an unrestricted licence, what are your options? We really need some sound advice as a career depends on finding a solution!!
Please help if you have any useful information.
 

Hi there, if you're in the UK then yes, it would lead to an automatic 'restricted' licence but that basically means it's restricted to 3 years, ie, every 3 years you have to apply for a new one. Added to that is the proviso that there are certain questions you have to answer but these are in relation to the diabetes and are designed to make sure you have hypo awareness etc. What sort of job are you on about and what do you mean by unrestricted?, obviously if you are talking HGVs etc then it's different again.

I don't see why it would stop you.. its only restricted in the number of years you have the license before it needs to be renewed

I had some extra hoops to jump through for my hgv but that renews every year now

If your choosen job must have totally unrestricted license then your only option is no insulin... obviously if you are a t1 then this is not an option
 
A restricted licence means end of your career as a race instructor - ARDS, the authority, do not accept them. It really is quite a specialised area as I am aware that there are a few racing drivers out there who are insulin dependent and we need to know how they managed to get their licence to race.
