Travelling down to London on Thursday there was a piece on diabetes on radio 5 . As i am new ito all this i listened on. Basically it frightened me to death talking about amputating peoples toes legs etc and basicly saying that anyone having type 2 was their own fault . The guy talking about type 1 was very degrogratory about type 2's. Did anyone else catch this programme.
No sorry I did not , but the media are awful with the stereotyping they do ...
Type 2 along with many other types can be caused by many reasons including heredity conditions ...
Labelling health conditions and or people is just not acceptable ...
Never blame yourself either ....yes we are all in control of our health in someways but the internal workings of our bodies , well there are something's we just can't control ...
Maybe other people heard it ....and will be along later ...Kat
No I didn't listen to it, but it's a common view that if you are fat you deserve diabetes. I have struggled with my weight for years. I have tried hard to lose weight, but even on this forum there are sometimes slim type 2's saying 'Why me? I'm slim I don't deserve it'. I don't think anyone deserves to have diabetes, but when you are fat for whatever reason that's all some people see. It makes me very sad.
It's unfortunate that there was a guy making derogatory remarks about type 2's and I can assure he isn't representative of type 1's as a whole, as for the amputations, that is unfortunately a reality with diabetes but much can be done to help prevent this happening, such as keeping your diabetes as well controlled as possible.
It's a lot easier to judge than to learn. I'm a type 1, and would never judge a type 2 negatively, especially after I read Dr Bernstein's diabetes solution. Here is a link to the relevant passage about weight and type 2: http://www.diabetesincontrol.com/issues/Issue_331/ThriftyGeneotype.pdf
