Before breakfast I take my basal and bolus insulin, take a reading, have breakfast, take a reading 2hrs later and find that my bloods are showing high, take another reading 1hr later and finding my bloods have come down to where I would have expected them to be an hour earlier, any suggestions, was going to up my insulin but fear it may drop too far after 3 hours...cheers
If your levels are returning to normal, you prob don’t need any more insulin.
It is about timing. We try to match the peak of the fast acting insulin profile with the peak of the carb absorption. If our levels spike, the insulin peak comes after the carb peak so we need to pre-bolus earlier.
The usual advice is to move the insulin time by 5 minutes at a time until you are comfortable with the spike in your levels. Remember, people without diabetes will see some spike after eating.
Readings 2 hours after eating are guidelines for type 2s diet based only. Not for people taking insulin as this can still be working up to 5 hours after injecting. The fact that you were in range 3 hours after is very good.
