really bad night sweats (HELP)

Hi, i have just joined my first diabetic forum....about time.
I am a male aged 39 and been type 1 since 1996.
since been diabetic i have also been put on a few different tablets, ie.Statins,Anti-depressents,and a tablet called protium for bad stomach acid.

anyway the reason for joining today is that i would love to find out if anybody can help in finding out why i sweat so much while sleeping. Doctors,specialist nurses, etc just can not give a def reason what is causing me to sweat.

when i say night sweat.....i mean really really bad sweating as if somebdy has thrown buckets of water over me and the bedding.

would love to know if anybody else has the same problem, or any advice on a solution.

Welcome to the forum, Garry. Can you tell us the exact name of the medications you are on ? Sometimes these things can have unwelcome side effects.

Is this a recent thing or have you been sweating like this for a while.

I am also type 1, but can't say that I have night sweats, not that I have noticed anyway. So by seeing your doctor, I take it you have had the meds your taking looked at for side-effects, which may include night sweats?

I know some medications can cause such syptoms, check the enclosed leaflets in the packet that your meds come in, you could also google the meds and see if nght sweats are listed. I am sure someone will be along shortly to offer some advice, keep checking your post for reply's.

HI Gary,

Forgot to say, I did have night sweats a little while back, but not how you describe. I was prescribe a drug called amitriptyline, it is often used for depression in higher doses, but I was given a smaller dose for nerve pain for a problem I have had for some time. Whilst taking this drug, I had horrendous nightmares, which meant that I woke up in a state of shock with my heart pounding and clammy skin. I googled the drug, and found that it can be a side-effect, so needless to say I don't take it anymore.

I notice that you are on anti-depressents, check the possible side-effects of the drug, if in doubt go back to your doctors and seek further advice, but I wouldn't stop any medication without first talking to your gp.

Thanks for the replys, its not a new thing started sweating about 2 years after been diagnosed.

the medication i take as follows: fluoxetine hydrochloride 20mg caps/deprerssion. Amitriptyline hydrochloride tab 10mg/for really bad swollen tendons on hands...this has just been increased to 25mg to treat nerve pain in feet. Pantoprazole e/c tabs 40mg/for treating stomach acid...if i miss this for 1 day i am sick with acid. Simvastatin tab 40mg for cholesteral control.....i have checked all side effects and yes they all mention sweating....but surely the doctors would have mentioned that these could be causing the really bad sweats...instead they have no answers...even had a 3 day blood monitor attached to make sure i am not having night hypo,s. I once even took a photo of the bedsheets wet thru/you could see my body imprint, to the doctors and specialist to show how bad i sweat. Its not every night it happens but maybe 3 to 4 times a week.

Meant to say about night hypo's, have you checked your blood when you wake up?

Yes, I would have thought your doctor would have mentioned about the possibility of night sweats whilst taking these meds. As I said Gary, best that you go back to your doctor's and mention again the severity of your sweating, and also mention that it is causing you great distress and anxiety.

Hi Nigel, thanks for your advice, the reason i joined today is because i just got back from my doctors because i want this sorting out once and for all....(after another really really bad sweat last night..the sheets, quilt , pillows soaking wet thru).her response...talk to the diabetic team again at the hospital on my next appointment.....2 years ago i had 3 months of tests..blood tests...x-rays..3 day monitor etc from the hospital team....after all these tests ..they found no answer...and basically told me to live with it. you mention nigel that you was on amitriplyne for nerve pain...can i ask what you now take if not amitriplyne.......i have come to the conclusion that maybee i need to stop taking 1 tablet at a time for say a 2 week period to rule out any side effects with that certain tablet. will consult my Doc and tell her my plans first.

Also wondering if it could be a side effect of the insulin... i take humalog & Lantus
