I have been recently diagnosed with type 2, and am wondering which is the best diet to follow? Seems to be conflicting views on low sugar(fairly obvious, i suppse), low carb etc.

It's safe to say I need to lose some weight - currently 6ft and 18 stone, and I want to achieve around 4 stone weight loss, whilst getting my blood sugar down,

Any comments / advice will be greatly appreciated

Hi Markp40 and welcome to the forums!

I am another newly diagnosed T2 and know just how you feel. You will no doubt hear from many others and far more experienced T2 than me, but I was advised to have a good look around the various forums here and threads, especially the "Low Carb" forum.

With that and with the info I had from elsewhere, it made complete sense to me to reduce my carb intake. I started a food diary and my first day (eating what I would usually eat) I had 197 Carbs in a day!! Over the next days - couple of weeks I have managed to reduc my carbs to 30-40 per day and found that mid-thirties is my level with the exercise I do. But I have also found that if I go below 30 it causes me problems.

I know some are able to take virtually no carbs at all and be perfectly happy - others simply cannot function below 70. IT IS a very individual thing and you will have to try things out for yourself. After the first few days, I never thought I would be happy below 70 carbs a day BUT at the moment it seems to be working.

If you want to look at some of my posts where I have given details of my diet/exercise etc. just search my username.

AND keep asking question - nothing is silly or can be asked too many times! Everyone here are friendly, supportive and eager to give you the benefit of their experience.

Best
Alice

Thanks Alice. It's really quite scary, and what with all the websites available, it's great to get some plain English. thanks again. Mark

hya mark and welcome to the forum,
have a good look around the forum and if u cant find the answers u are looking for, plz ask, no question is silly or too small

Hi Mark,

As Totsy said, if you have a good look around the forum, particularly in the food, low carb and stickies sections, you will a great deal about different diets so should be able to work out something that you think will work for you. But just ask if you have any questions.

One of my favourite newbie sites

Apart from doing it himself, this is a distillation of multitudes of experience on multitudes of forums. The key is to test your *own* responses to things.

A few individuals do do well on the standard high carb low fat diet but they are significantly outnumbered by the rest of us.
