referral to a consultant at the hospital

I had my diabeties review and prescription review at my GP recently. The nurse that carried this out said that I would benefit from seeing a consultant at the hospital. She then went on to say that I would have to self refer myself. Surely it is the job of the GP to do this or am I mistaken?

Referring yourself to a consultant ? Unusual i would think...unless u r paying for it....most probably a way for your gp surgery to avoid them paying out of thier budget for it

I thought a GP had to refer someone to a consultant. I've never heard of self-referral.
