Well, I have just phoned the surgery to get my results and they are as follows:
Full Blood Count = NORMAL
Lipids / Cholesterol = 4.4 (SATISFACTORY)
Thyroid = NORMAL
Liver = NORMAL
Fasting = 7.4
Hba1c = 41 (NORMAL)
The receptionist said the note on my records said NOT DIABETIC!
So relieved!

Well done on your overall results. In your shoes, I'd want to be keeping a very close eye on that fasting level:

Well done, but bear in mind that your HbA1c at 41 is right at the top end of 'Normal'. If I were you I would be taking appropriate dietary steps anyway (reducing carbs and avoiding sugars) to stop it climbing into the prediabetic range or higher.

So glad you've had good news... hope you won't think I'm raining on your parade, but... I feel I should say something, having been where you are now a few short weeks ago, and having had such good advice and support on this forum!
I was/am in a similar position to you with a normal Hba1c but one dodgy (over 7) fbs. Because at first (before the Hba1c) they told me I did have type 2, I started to take all the steps advised on here. Cutting carbs, testing my blood sugar against what I ate, etc.
After the Hba1c, I too was told that I 'wasn't' diabetic after all, but I am still acting 'as if' the diagnosis was the other way (ie, was type 2) by continuing to cut carbs, testing my bs with a meter every day for fbs, before and two hours after meals (except when I have tested extensively a particular combo of food and know it is 'harmless' to me). I've lost nearly 2 stone in 7 weeks, have upped my exercise and am seeing a better fbs in the mornings. I've still got a lot of weight to lose, but I haven't felt this good for years... And I know, at the least, my results were a warning, and I'm grateful for it and the chance to improve my health and (hopefully) avoid sliding to the other side of the line.
But I'm not complacent, and I would urge you too to take what has happened as a serious pointer to what you need to do. would definitely reiterate what the others on here say... take this experience as a warning to get the fbs under control, because it - and you - are worth it!!
Hi again. Another update as I've had the reply from the surgery and my Dr. He has said the following:
So, I guess I'm PRE DIABETIC.
- the finger prick test was just above normal
- the HbA1c is a more accurate way of diagnosing diabetes
- my HbA1c result is well below the level for a diabetic
- he classifies me as having "impaired glucose tolerance"
- he states this is a pre diabetic state and needs monitoring
- I should lose weight, eat a diet high in fibre, low in sugar and be active
- there is a recall on my records to repeat the glucose and HbA1c in a year
I now intend to change my eating habits from Jan 2015 to try to avoid T2 diabetes by cutting down on carbs and swopping things like white bread for wholemeal, white rice for brown etc, etc. I will probably adopt the GI diet and have a couple of books somewhere by Rick Gallop - I'll need to dig these out or buy another via Ebay.
Any other advice, tips or idea would be really appreciated.
Would it be an idea to buy a meter to self test from time to time?
If so, can anyone recommend one that is easy to use and relatively "pain free" due to the fact I hate needles!

YES!!!! Get a meter!!! You might be surprised at the results, even with whole meal bread and brown rice. Hopefully someone else can give you advice on what the best meter to get is when you have to buy your own.

7.1 what? Was that your fasting? What about HbA1c?I was told by my doctor after my annual blood test this year that I was probably now T2 my first test was 7.1 she got me to have another one two weeks later and the second test was 6.9 so doctor said I am not yet diabetic I have been prediabetic for over 3 years and I have been doing moderate carbs and no sugar stuff since I first knew I was but I was not overweight When I first started doing the no sugar stuff and moderate carbs I lost a stone in weight which I did not need to loose now I have to be careful not to loose any more as I have never put that stone back on. I hope you manage to keep it at bay for as long as possible
