A few possible causes to consider:

If you eat your evening meal late are you sure it isn't your QA insulin that's to blame?.. meaning your insulin to carb ratio is wrong. The reason why I ask is your hypo's are quite early on between 10.30 and 1am.

Another could be exercise earlier in the evening, if this is the case then you need to reduce your insulin to compensate.

If none of the above then try reducing your basal insulin again, what time do you take it?

In any event ask your DSN for advice and show them your record book with your bg readings, carb intake and insulin doses, hopefully they'll advise and you can get a good nights sleep

Have tried changing you bolus time to being earlier.

Have to say, if that was me, I would drop basal by another unit and monitor my reaction...if STILL hypo-ing would drop by another etc.

I think there must be hundreds of type 1 diabetics using bolus/basal who if they bothered to get up in the night and test bg levels every 2hrs would find out that between certain hours like 11pm to 3am, their bg levels drop like a hat but from 3 or 4am onwards bg levels start to climb upwards and that if they reduce the nightime basal down, they deal with the low bg levels between 11pm and 3am but the reduction doesnt deal with the higher bg levels that occur from 4am onwards and those levels just get higher than before.

What do you do???????? well years ago I had this trouble and thought about it a bit and decided to eat some carb before going to bed (but the amount I eat could only be determined by getting up and testing to see what effect eating the carb had on my bg levels, but some might need to eat 5g or 10g carb and some might need 15g.... all can be sorted through bg testing and adjusting) and if the low bg levels stop but then get far higher from 4am, then increase the nightime basal up by 1 or 2u. That way, the carb will deal with the low times and the increase in basal will deal with the times when bg levels goes higher.....

iHs I DO get up in the night occasionally to check things out, but I work full time, I have a dog to walk and aid in the care of my grandparents and 4 nieces and nephews. Continual broken sleep just isn't ideal

I agree doing a few nights to get the lay of the land is important, but continually? It just isn't going to happen!

No no not offended! Just feeling snappy today as there are some cupcakes in my eye line that just won't go away! I'm sorry you feel that way!

I agree testing through the night is vital at certain stages. I just mean broken sleep is as bad as no sleep for some people (or maybe just me haha)

It's my own fault, I made the **** cupcakes! What was I thinking....

Thankfully I'm the boss today so the sack isn't an option! Potentially could be carted off to the loony bin though

My plan is to have one with lunch so I can control the insulin. I intentionally made a smaller one with only half icing so I could have a treat. But later. It's always later.......

Hi, i was having lots of night time hypo's so now have my lantus in the morning instead of before bed. I was told to reduce it but i went from 22 units down to 2 units and it didn't make any difference!! Also try testing before bed and if it's lower than 10 have a couple of biscuits or half a sandwich. Good luck.

I suffered night time hypo,s, normally 2.30ish, changed basal insulin from insulatard to lantus, also changed basal dose to morning, brought forward by 2 hours each day. Not had 1 night time hypo since. Doesn't suit all but worth discussing with your hospital/doctor.

Well I know that for the past six evenings from around 8-10 p.m I have been having constant lows. Even when I correct one, another one creeps up. I decided to just reduce my Novorapid and have more carbs at dinner time. Problem more or less solved.

Also try and do blood tests every hour. A lot can happen in an hour.
