Thank you. This sounds like another brave attempt, of many, to get islet cell transplants to survive. And who wants to be on anti-rejection medication forever as the alternative?
There is interesting work going on with using a mild hookworm infection in coeliacs to stimulate part of the human immune system to 'balance out' the other part of the immune system that attacks the intestinal wall leading to CD. (James Cook University, Queensland (report due October this year).
So if one could balance out the immune system in such a way to halt and ? reverse the auto-immune cascade of things leading to T1D, then in the early stages harvest some the person's own remaining islet cells, grow them outside the body and implant them back where they came from. ? Who knows, that at least would be an advance?
Hint: consider investing in hookworms !!
And I have a 'fair dinkum' picture of a flying pig, so anything is possible !!
