So I was diagnosed last April at hb1ac number of 96, reduced each 3 months to 48, 44 on metformin twice a day, stopped meds in Oct results today were 45... quite pleased with that, is that pre-diabetes range?? Only negative is they want to speak to me about cholesterol (prob too much meat cheese and cream!) and liver function results
it's never simple is it! Always something else to throw at you...... any advise welcome
 
Yes that is pre diabetes range, well done. Those little talks are because although you may have some problems, they have some pills even if you don't.
 
Well done, that is brilliant news as regards the HbA1c. Yes, it is in the pre-diabetic range (42 to 47) Under 42 next time and that will be non-diabetic!)

Before you speak to them about your cholesterol and liver results, do get a print out so you can study the results at leisure before your appointment. If you don't understand them, we can help. You will need the full cholesterol results (HDL/LDL/Triglycerides) If you didn't fast for the blood test the Triglycerides results are most probably raised. It is important you get this print out (or see your results on-line if your surgery offers this) otherwise you won't have any information to research before your appointment.
 
Thank you for your comments, unfortunately I only have a phone consultation on Tuesday, however I am seeing my diabetic nurse on the Wednesday so will get more information from her then.. slightly concerned but until I know what the results are as u can't do anything about it without all the facts. I am going to work really hard for an under 42 next time! I know I need to work on my spikes in sugars.... ceri x
 
So apparently my cholesterol is a little high combined 5.3, since low carbing I have been eating more eggs, cheese cream etc could this be why? How do u all get round this? I also have raised bilirubin levels apparently it called Gilbert syndrome, he said you've had this since 2013 have I I thought!? Nothing to worry about he said... x
 
Your total cholesterol is 5.3? That isn't high! It may be a tad higher than the NHS wants it to be but goodness, it is good!
What was the breakdown? That's what matters. The total is really irrelevant, even if your doctor says it's high.
 
Ok I'm seeing my lovely diabetic nurse tomorrow I will ask if she can print me a report and get back to you, he said my good chlosteral had gone up as well as my bad, I was at work so was difficult to ask too many questions. Xx
Anyone heard of Gilbert syndrome before?
 
Hi @dan1jess2 Well done on bringing your HbA1c down into the pre-diabetic range. You should be able to get down into the non-diabetic range by your next test if you keep up the good work.
Your cholesterol level isn't too high. NHS guidelines are that it should be 5 or below for a non-diabetic and 4 or below for a diabetic, but there are different medical opinions on this. Put cholesterol into the search box in top right corner and you will find a lot of threads about it.
My cholesterol went up from 4.7 to 6.1 and my GP suggested I cut down the cream, butter and cheese and eat more oily fish, avocados and olive oil instead if I want to eat higher fat.
But my HDL has increased which is good, and my ratios have improved which is more important than the overall figure, as I understand it.

You need to get the breakdown (HDL, LDL and triglycerides) to get a better picture of how your cholesterol levels are.
The ratios of those to each other are more relevant than the total figure, as I understand it anyway.

Thanks guys going to ask for a breakdown of it today it's so nice to have people to talk to on here as no one I know has diabetes and no one understands about it. I was on 2 metformin a day the doctor told me to reduce to one however that morning I had a hypo so she told me to stop which I did so straight from 2 to none overnight x

HDL - 1.7
Ldl - 3.2

She said she will test again in 6mths if it goes up will probably need tablets Nooooo I thought.
 
Well if you put those figures into the calculator above (post #12) it says all your ratios are Ideal.
 
Yes i thought that my nurse said ideally with someone with diabetes they would like it under 4 combined x
 
Yes that is the NHS guidelines, 5 or under for a non-diabetic person, and 4 or under for a diabetic. But if you read the threads on here about statins and cholesterol you will see there is a lot of controversy about how useful that is.

The lower the trigs, the more large fluffy particles will be in your LDL. The large fluffy bits are actually quite good. It is the little hard bits that cause the damage. There are tests available for a breakdown of LDL particles, but they are not routinely tested in the UK. Your trigs are nice and low, so that is excellent.

Ratio standards:
Non HDL should be under 3.4
TC/HDL should be under 4
Trigs/HDL should be under 0.87.
