I was diagnosed type 2, 4 years ago and this is the first time my eye test has indicated anything strange.
I have a small cotton ball patch on the left eye? Doc said nothing to worry about thinks could be blood pressure related.
Anyone enlighten me as to what this is and how worried should I be.
Hi Ian
I had the same diagnosis a year or so after being found to be T2. It is where there has been a small bleed
from your retina. It may be blood pressure related but could also be BS or Cholesterol related.
The advice I was given was to reduce all three, which I did and then kept them stable. The cotton wool has now
been reabsorbed into my body and there is now nothing visually there.
Has the Doctor said you are being referred to the eye hospital for further scans? I was sent to get
a dye injected and further photographs taken to check that it was a one off event. This test checks
to see if the retinopathy has become proliferative where new weaker blood vessels are produced which
are liable to more small bleeds.
There are several treatments available if needed but the main thing is to bring BP, BS and Cholesterol
down to more normal levels and in all likelihood no other treatment will be needed.
Something I wasn't warned about was .. You shouldn't try to being your BS down too quickly as this
can have an initial negative effect and may risk more little bleeds over doing it slowly and surely.
Cheers Gary.
Not referred for eye hospital he said these things can go just as quick. I have been a bit lazy with my control this year mainly over the xmas way too much food and drink I am on 4 metformin, 1 10mg ramipril for BP and 60mg Simvistatin for Chol. Time to get sorted I think.
