Type 1 Sharps bin??

Does anybody know what the different holes on top of a sharps bin are for? Just curious
 
Usually to remove needles from syringes/pens without touching them with your fingers. Might be other reasons too but if there are I don't know what they are!
 
Having worked in NHS for 20 years they also taking blades of hob scalpels however I have never ever seen anybody used them to do this but they never use any of the holes for anything
