I'm a recently diagnosed Type 2 and just doing my online shop for our holiday. I normally cook everything from scratch and am finding it hard enough to work out what I can and can't eat as it is. However, when we camp I usually use jars of pasta sauces for convenience but most have added sugar. Is there a upper limit on the carbs I should be looking for on the labels?

That's a tricky question, as we each have different tolerances or desires when it comes to our diets. Many people go for no more than 10gr of carb per 100gr, but you have to just think about that a bit.

If you're talking about a can on, say beef stew, if it had 30gr of carb per 100gr, that could mean I would be eating a lot of carb in a sitting, bearing in mind I'd probably have half a can. If a condiment sauce, like a hot sauce or mustard had a similar level of carbs per 100gr, and serving would mean I was still only eating a small amount of carbohydrate, if a teaspoonful or dessert spoonful is all I would eat. Do you see what I mean?

Like you, I don't "do" many packaged foods, but rumour has it the Lloyd Grossman prepared sauces tend to be lower carb than many others. I imagine that the big supermarkets would stock them.

Have an excellent holiday.

Lloyd Grossman does a couple of surprisingly low carb sauces (puttanesca is one)
And Pataks curry pastes are good. They look highish carb, but you don't need much, and they are intense flavours! (The pastes not the sauces!)

Good luck. I love camping. Havent been for ages, but i used to take 1 small petrol stove and a wok. Did everything from a full fry up, to stir fries, to no-rice curries, to lemon ginger chicken... aah, happy days...

Thank you both. The Lloyd Grossman tip is helpful - have added a couple to my shopping basket and Patak's paste will also be useful. I'm vegetarian and can't tolerate much fat, nor carbs either it seems, so looking like lots of vegs, pulses and tofu! (Oh and eggs which is good as we have our own chickens...)

Soo looking forward to getting away; it's been a tough few months.

Have a great holiday @Daffodil373 ! Campng might mean that you're getting more exercise and lots of fresh air and activity, so you may not need to be quite so strict with your carbs as usual. i could imagine achieving great stir-fries and lovely cheese omelettes on a campng stove, but it depends what you are able to take with you or buy locally. We're planning a camping trip soon and I've been wondering about the low carb version too! I'm not going to worry about the carb content of the instant rice packs, or cans of veggie stew, but I will watch my portion size, and fill up on salads, celery, butter, cheese. and eggs and I'll pack a stack of oopsies. I'm glad you posted this because it's made me realise I need to plan!
