Type 2 Should we be a little more cautious of following the Keto diet ?

Type of diabetes
Type 2
I know this has been advocated as a way of getting diabetes type 2 under control with less medication but
I have seen an article today which is worrying.
No One Should Be Doing Keto Diet' Says Leading Cardiologist
Dr. Kim Williams says the science behind the fad diet is 'wrong'

The keto diet through studies has demonstrated that it increases mortality by 22%.

The gentleman in question is a proponent of a vegan way of life, if you look deeper into his ethos and his articles you may be surprised at how much misrepresentation of data he uses.

Thanks for posting this link - Going vegan would also seem to be going to another extreme. I think we all need to have a balanced diet which includes some protein fish, eggs but not processed or red meat, some fat and some carbohydrate (to avoid hypos) and a lot of non-starchy vegetables

Are you on insulin? As a whole lot of keto followers here don't take any medication so I'm not sure how I "need" some carbohydrate? A there is zero requirement for dietary carbs then why bother to eat them?

Why not red meat? Of what benefit is carbohydrate except to treat a hypo for those on insulin or those on drugs which actively lower blood glucose levels?

We do not need carbohydrates. And for type 2 diabetics they spike blood glucose.
Unless someone is on blood lowering medication the risk for hypos is very low because the liver is very helpful in releasing glucose. Sometimes too helpful especially in the morning.

Mmmm I had a 16 ounce steak for my Birthday.
After everyone tried a piece and without the bone, it might have been 12 that ended up in my mouth.
Best birthday meal!! I even asked for a extra herbed butter for on top.
I had the Lowest FBG is the next morning I had in a long time. 5.8

There seems a strong connection between red meat and developing some cancers according to Cancer Research UK.
I take gliclazide which boosts insulin production and needs to be balanced. I tried last year to see if I could control by diet alone and was unsuccessful. I have had side effects with metformin and linagliptin.

It is good to go thru both sides of the arguments and then decide which one makes more sense and is sustainable for you.

Many of us have gone thru that and overcame our misguided fear of fats and fasting etc...and remained medication free.

Hmm that will be based on the WHO/IARC study which shows an "association" which Dr Zoe Harcombe completely demolished in one of her more cutting pieces of forensic examination. Once you look at the studies that 'association" was based on you'll start to see how the actual data can be misrepresented. I also think there were a large number of WFPB proponents on the panel which I believe led to one resignation.

The evidence that suggests a link between red meat and cancer is flimsy at best. The only class of drug not recommended alongside a Keto diet (fewer than 20g of carbs per day) are the flozins (SGLT2-inhibitors) because of the risks of DKA.

Yummy dinner and great fbg, what's not to like. Happy Birthday!

The news reported on Tuesday that women who rise early in the morning are at lower risk of developing breast cancer. But that those who go to bed late are at a higher risk. As a woman who usually goes to bed about 2am and rises at 6am I wonder if I balance out to neutral?
Someone somewhere is always finding a link for something to cancer. We’d have to give up a whole lot of everything to keep up. The only problem I have in the here and now is my diabetes so if plenty meat (red included) and low carbs keeps that under control, then that’s all I can ask for. The rest of the if’s and maybes, well, they’re just that aren’t they

I suddenly have the biggest craving for steak! That’s tomorrow’s dinner sorted!

This video considers the Red Meat => Cancer evidence

Well worth watching. Certainly puts things into perspective,

I couldn’t agree more. We all have to make choices with the information we have. My strongest tool is the BG meter. It tells me Red meat and butter are the best thing for me
The thing about life is that no one gets out alive.

I quite like red meat, and I've eaten it for probably 75 year now and reckon I'm far more likely to die from old age than from getting cancer by eating it.

I've also eaten a fairly relaxed but very low carb/ketogenic diet for nearly five years and it's actually improved my overall health along with my glucose levels. I've also eaten a full fat diet all my life (which was our normal way of eating when I was growing up!) and it was only more recently when this unfortunately got combined with consuming higher carbs that I ever got any problems. Low carb's a much more natural way of eating than the current rather long term fad for stuffing faces full of high carb snacks at every possible opportunity.
