Hi all..I am feeling very poorly with flu like symptoms..I have been sick about an hour ago after trying rice pudding & some chocolate. .sorry if too much info but it didn't stay down.. I take split lantus (16am/16pm) this has been changed three days ago and im noticing lower bgs now in the day, 4/5mml. This is too low for me. The problem I have is I haven't eaten today aside from above and a slice of toast first thing. I cannot face food as I still feel sick..my bgs are about 6.9/7 and I just need to sleep. . What can I do? If anything. . Thanks x
 
If your Lantus is set correctly you shouldn't need to worry about going low. Keep an eye on BG and test for ketones. If you are not keeping anything down, try to stay hydrated by sipping water. You can make a rehydration solution by adding 1 teaspoon sugar and a pinch of salt to a glass of water. Otherwise some clear soup would be ideal.

Hope you feel better soon, but call out of hours if you develop both ketones and BGs in the teens
 
Hi Robert. I dont think my lantus is right..currently having hypos in the day yet hopefully they will hold through the night. Just worried. Had a handful of grapes which have stayed down so far... Thanks
 
As you just changed your Lantus it may not be right. Maybe take it down a little. Are the hypos morning or evening?

Actually 4/5 should not be hypo. If I remember you were running very high recently? When your BG comes down you can feel hypo at first until you get used to it.

But definitely run sick day rules and check ketones.
 
It's unusual for most people not to eat anything, and when they do they often find their basal is too high. But actually yours sounds about right, as long as you are not going below 4.
 
Poor you. If your worried about going low and not keeping food down, try sipping some full sugar orange squash or even small sips of lucozade. Good advice for others to keep testing and test for ketones. Hope the bug is short lived and that you'll feel better tomorrow.
 
Hi Spiker..I have always felt hypo around 5..I did try lowering my levels but then lost hypo awareness & was having levels of 3 and not being aware! Im more comfortable with my levels running around 6/7. Its higher than the norm but with me having such unpredictable days with my kids and running about I prefer them that way.

I haven't eaten aside from the grapes & my levels are currently 12..still not feeling great though. Have started taking 16 eve & 12 in the morning. My 'hypo' like symptoms get bad at about midday onwards, dn suggested lowering am first looking to increase pm lantus. Sickness bug not helping. Im surprised my levels werent higher today with me feeling so wretched.

Hey lcarter sorry that is a rough time.

Lowering the morning Lantus sounds right if the hypos are from mid day.

Are you correcting with quick acting insulin from the highs of 12 and are you following a Sick Day protocol.
 
Don't forget that there are quite a few carbs in a handful of grapes, so if you're not dropping you might need to bolus for them.

Levels are now 11 so have come down 1mml in one hour. Reluctant to correct until the morning, your thoughts are welcomed though!

If you've dropped 1 mmol in an hour then I would not correct
 
1 mmol down from 11 mmol is within the normal uncertainty of the meter reading and does not prove anything. How long since you did a correction? If less than 4-5 hours then don't correct. If more than that I would correct, cautiously.

Have you tested ketones? Please follow the sick day rules Robert posted.
 
Sorry I fell asleep. Checked sugars at 4am and they were 8. They are still that now. Didn't correct.
 
If you are unwell then changing basals is not a good idea, because as soon as you are over the bug things will change again. It takes about 3 days for Lantoss to start working as I understand it. So you would be better off doing any corrections with with either some glucose gel or glucose liquid or high correction with your bolus insulin.

I don't agree that Lantus changes take 3 days, this is a myth. But I agree with @CarbsRok that making basal changes while ill is problematic.
 
Not changing basal. . Am eating again so am just testing lots and taking novarapid when I eat. Feeling better too. Woo!
