I fancy a grumble. Had a call from my surgery backalong: "We'd like to invite you to a prediabetes group. A diabetic nurse will be there and we'll have diabetic-friendly cake". Wow, the GP practice is finally getting with it, I thought and so off I went just to see what was there. Walked into an empty room, met by a Health Care lady putting out leaflets. Then it went pear-shaped.... The leaflets were those produced by the Other Site - the one containing 'healthy' swaps was prominent, and also their recipe for the diabetic-friendly cake which was blackberry and apple, with 17.7g per small portion. No, I didn't have a piece!

The HC lady asked me what my diet was and I diplomatically said it wasn't anything like what was being promoted. She did say she thought 'they' were fixated on the Eatwell Plate.... I must say that, for those who have a very junk-heavy processed diet, the EP is a step in the right direction. But, as we all know, it ain't good for diabetics! Sadly, I was the only one who turned up which is a real shame given the prominence of diabetes in the Press, but with all the news about the benefits of LCHF (ignoring the latest silly stuff rubbishing it) and more and more HCPs embracing it, it's extremely disappointing that my practice just hasn't got on board, especially as another local surgery has a truly amazing DN who has hit the headlines for her fabulous work with her patients.

Thank you - I feel better for that!

I'm guessing until the nhs has proof no ailments caused by low carb then they won't promote.
I forget why they stopped epileptic patients have it? Someone might know?

The nhs don't mind if we do what's bests for ourselves. They can concentrate on those who aren't capable.

Low carb diet is variable to so many people.

My bariatric dietician advised no lower than 20g per meal. (even thou on 500 units of insulin a day) Which is about right for me to get any effect on my bgs which can lead to weight loss.
Of course protein is getting converted into glucose in my carbs absence. But slower bg changes and less heavy spikes which is only needed if I go hypo, at night.
Low carb diets change the dynamics but we are all different so have different dynamics to start with.
I love low carb otherwise I'd be very very depressed with my diabetic management options. It's a great tool. Like insulin or tablets.

I think the reason they stopped promoting low carb to epilepsy patients was the same as for diabetes, they found a drug that they thought would solve everything.
It's a shame most doctors are fixated on medication as the first line of defence.

There is a great quote near the front of 'Eat Rich Live Long'. (Cummins and Gerber):

"Let me ask you something. If the rule you followed brought you to this - of what use was the rule?"
