Sitagliptin

my concultant said it would be a good med for my sister to go on as metformin made her ill she's not on it yet but her gp is looking into it the doc said it should lower her Hb1Ac from 8.6ish to around 7ish

I've seen several people use it. Good improvement on blood results, one person has lost a fair bit of weight and no one has had any side effects. More than you can say for metformin, gliclazide and rosiglitazone !

Thats very interesting, I'm on that level of medication 6 x 500mg Metrormin,8mg Rosglitazone and now 8mg Gliclazide as well until my referall to Diabetic Specialist comes through.My BS is high,HBa1c currently 11.9.It doesn't work(for me)!!
Will be bringing up Byetta/Sitagliptin at the first opportunity as well as asking for a GTT and c-peptide test.

Sounds like Sitagliptin is the one thats doing it for you, well done.

If a cheese & onion cob is what I think it is (Black Country speciality?) then it is pretty much 100% carbohddrate, which will convert to glucose in your blood usually at somewhere between 15 to 30 minutes after eating it. That is why you are just seeing the raise in BS half an hour after your 2 cobs. If it wasn't for the sitagliptin tablet, I suspect the raise would heve been much higher.

Couldn't have put it better myself. Carbohydrates increase your blood sugar levels, so if you reduce your carbohydrate intake then your BS will be lower.

Sugar is just another form of carbohydrate, but one that has an immediate effect in raising your blood sugar (within a minute or two). Non-sugar carbohydrates also raise your blood sugar level but slower than sugar does (generally after around 15 - 30 minutes). Sugar-free is a great idea, but not carb-free. Our bodies need a certain amount of carbohydrate to function properly, but nowhere near as much as most people eat! And I'm afraid that the traditional cheese & onion cob is off-limits to a diabetic apart from a very occasional treat.

You will find an enormous amount about carbohydrates on this forum, mostly under the "Diabetes Discussions" section. You will also find that most of the more experienced diabetics on the site will advocate a lower-carb diet. Not necessarily low-carb, but certainly a lot lower than the government Food Standards Agency recommends.

Stevie hi , cant answer for Sitagliptin as im on Byetta which is written up as having a side effect of weight loss. However If you check out the other threads on here for Carbs or Carbohydrates etc you will probably pick up the clues from the experiences of a lot of others.
Like you i am a 6footer. I follow the Low carb route, and it is comming off in fits n starts but it is coming off. A chunk of it is to have resolve and stick with it. Its the one thing nobody else can do for you.

Keep posting your experiences as there a few newer treatments about now and it will be usefull for others to know about them
