Six Week Management Programme

Hi All

A Doctor in A & E on the 4th July diagnosed me with type 2 diabetes. As I was departing
to get my Metformin tablets, I was still trying to figure out how I had lost about 8kg in a short period of time. A DSN said she had just read my report and wanted me to stay overnight in hospital - as she believed I had type 1. BG of 25.1, HbA1c of 13.3, constant thirst and weight loss.

The DSN even followed me to my house with a kit to check my bloods (and show me how to) and urine. As ketones were present, she asked me to return to hospital, I asked her to give the Metformin a chance to work over the weekend. She rang the Doctor who diagnosed Type 2 and he advised the same.

Monday morning my BG was 18.1 and before lunch 30.9, I went straight to A & E. I had another DSN assist me and asked me to go straight on insulin. My training on how to use the pen started straight. away. Another Doctor advised me I would be on a six week programme and I wouldn't know myself at the end of it - if I stuck to rigid; diet, exercise and insulin.

For the first two weeks, I had a phone call every morning, to check my BG. Slowly but surely the results appeared.

I met my Consultant today for review and eye test, also dietician, podiatrist, and thankfully the initial DSN, I felt an overdue thank you was in order. My tests were good as my BG has been between 4 and 9 over the last two weeks - I test four times a day and take insulin, twice a day. My HbA1c is now 10.2.

And at my next appointment in four months, the Consultant wants me to aim at being 8 or less.

This has all been a shock to the system, getting used to a rigid lifestyle. But I have put 5kg back on and feeling a lot better. They explained today, I could go to 4 injections a day if I wanted more flexibility.

I have been reading this forum everyday, since I discovered it, and have found it, to be so helpful.

All the best

Hi Seabill

It's a familiar story for many of us.

One thing that struck a cord with me was your reference to a "rigid lifestyle". I would STRONGLY urge you to try switching to the 4 injections a day system.

This is known as a basal-bolus regime and will allow you to eat much more normally. You take one injection to cover your body's basic metabolic needs (basal) and then one injection to "cover" each meal you have. THis means you can eat when and what you like (within reason) and still have great control.

When you get to grips with that system, you will also see that many diabetics choose to lower the amount of carbohydrate they have in their diet because this also helps acheive great control.

In the meantime, please ask any questions you may have and good luck!
