Sounds a bit like Mesothelioma from blus asbestos, (Wittenoom in West Australia).

Dormant for years then strikes.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing I would not change the advise I gave my friend over several years and in the same circumstances I would not hestate to offer advice or guidance to the best of my ability now, no matter how futile it may seem.
