Hi all,

After a three month wait for an urgent appointment, I finally got to see the consultant yesterday. The good news is my HbA1c is down from 10.3 in September to 6.9 yesterday, so I was really chuffed with that.

The bad news is that the consultant now believes I've been mis-diagnosed Type 2. The consultant says my BG level on a strictly carb-reduced diet is like Type 2, but my body's reaction to food is more like Type 1 and as I don't respond to the medication Type 2s usually respond to, he's putting me on a low dose of Basal Insulin before bed to see if that can get my fasting levels under control and help with the high post-food levels during the day, but it's a bit 'trial and error' and for the time being I'm classified as 'diabetes, type unknown' He says my BGs are dotting around so much (going to 13+ after food, but sometimes falling as low as 4.0 between meals with no real pattern to it) that it's going to be tricky to get the dose right - especially as I'm so petite. So that's all pretty scary and daunting.

Anyway, I was taught how to inject myself - and given that I'm a complete wimp with needles, I was amazed at how I managed to do it. I've just done my first actual injection and I'm pretty apprehensive, but fingers crossed that it works and doesn't result in my BGs going too low.

So thanks everyone who has given me so much advice over the past 3 months. It's been a pretty steep learning curve. Now onto the next phase - life with insulin injections!
