The webpage you have quoted says recommended starting dose 10 units per day (or 0.2 units / kg) for type 2 diabetes, followed by adjustment. It also notes that for people with type 1 diabetes, the ratio is 1/3 of total daily insulin as Lantus, which leaves 2/3 in short acting. What it doesn't mention, but probably assumes health professionals know, is that many people with type 2 diabetes take only Lantus. However, you have said that you are also taking Apidra, so that would mean your Lantus dose will be lower than if you were taking only Lantus.
Anyway, it does make sense to start low and adjust gradually.
