Still diabetes free.

Have you SEEN the conditions dairy cows are kept in? It isn't some sunny field somewhere and hand milking for most of them! They /are/ limping and hobbling around.

They're thin, dirty, sickly and yielding 10 times the amount they should be (even if you consider having their suckling calves removed from them and them being repeatedly impregnated normal)

I am not a vegan or even a vegetarian but it really is disgusting.. Im all about the soy products but in all honesty, not being holier than thou, I only made the switch because I suddenly became lactose intolerant a few years ago. >_>

It's hard I know and we do not have any say in how animals are raised and slaughtered. In an ideal world they would all be happy and free range, get beer and back rubs like Kobe cows and be slaughtered in the most humane way possible. I am an animal lover but eat meat. All of us are hypocritical in some way and I'll bet a good percentage of vegans still manage to eat a product they didn't even know had animal derivatives in it..

What infuriates me is factory farming.. I buy free range eggs but it doesn't really help the battery hens :/ I've worked on a farm about a third of my life and have a deep connection to animals, but the little wolf in me loves steak.. Terrible I know..

I use soy milk or rice milk.. Very yummy. Rice milk seems to have less impact on my BG than actual rice and actual rice less impact than toast/burger buns/flatbreads etc Almond milk is a great option too.

So much meat gets wasted... We don't NEED factory farming to meet the demand for meat at low cost. If free range was the norm and there was less wastage. Grass fed organic burgers would be as cheap as the processed ****. But that's another debate lol

So much advice from so many people trying to help me get my lifestyle under control. I am taking it all in and trying to make sense of it all. I am luckier than most who sign up to this site, I had lost my need for medication before I got here. I am slowly getting my carbs to 100g per day. Very high for most, but at least 1/2 of what I used to have several months back, and probably 1/3rd of what I was consuming as a diabetic a few years back. It's no wonder I spent years as a wreck on the sofa each morning waiting for my blood to sort itself out. I lost a lot of work through that. If I had known about low carbing several years ago.....

Ah well, I will try different things as they are suggested, and stick to the ones I like. Can't say I am over keen on Greey yoghurt though, I think it needs a few spoons of sugar to sweeten it up. Only joking! I will use up the big pot I bought and then decide. The Weight Watchers yogs are very low in carbs and the lowest I have found apart from the Greek style. I can't actually remember why I started to eat yoghurt, I hated it years ago. Perhaps it was a health kick I got onto.

A friend worked in a Canadian slaughter house many years ago. He said the whole cow was processed into leather or food apart from the eyes and butts. I don't know nothing about that.

Oh yes the whole cow is processed but tonnes of meat gets dumped every day. Food waste is a big issue. Just because all of the cow reaches the shoe shop and supermarkets doesn't mean all of it gets bought and eaten :/ Sad... We're a throwaway society in general. Got so much stuff we can't actually use it all

That aside, congratulations on your journey so far. Hope you continue to benefit from sticking around on this site.

Thanks LittleWolf, nice name by the way! I do like names. A neighbour of mine was called Enoch Aloysius McMasters. Wonderful!!

Anyway, I gave up on the Greek yoghurt, it was only 2 grams better than thw WW yoghurt I normally have. I am now at a point where I think my diet is sorted. My carbs will be between 100-150g per day which is the important thing. I will also maintain my present weight. I will have my next blood test in 5 1/2 months. I will let the results of that determine my next move. Of course I could buy some test strips and resume testing. I will have to see how much they are.

you may be being unnecessarily harsh on yourself. If you don't already self monitor, ask the doctor about getting a meter. You don't have to test every meal, or even every day, but you can work out what carbs, and how much of them, raise your BS further than is desireable.

I do have a monitor that was given to me way back by my doctor who also used to issue repeat prescriptions for the test strips with no bother. However, the old test strips I have expired in 2008 and my db nurse used to tell me to only test if I felt the need. I don't feel that I have to test now, I can eat almost anything with no ill feelings but I think I should stop being so blinkered and resume testing. Maybe before and after breakfast (my breakfast is the same each day, 60g of porridge, low fat yoghurt and a cup of tea). I could also test after trying a few different meals in the evening. Lunch is always grapefruit and cream so I won't test then. First thing I have to do is get some strips for my old machine! I think it still works but it needs a new battery. I try not to be too harsh with myself, I have given up bananas and grapes, biscuits, and I am virtually chocolate free. But, I don't want to become diabetic again. Well at least not for a long time anyway. Hitting 60 next month, then November will be my first anniversary of being medication free. I might have to go to my favourite pub for my favourite meal. I might even test before and after to see what effect that would have.
One last thing, back when I used my monitor the surgery gave me a box to put the prickers and test strips in which I would then return to the surgery for disposal. What happens nowadays?
