Had this on and off before but two docs didn't seem that concerned . I was wearing insoles on my new shoes that were making them a little tight so removed insoles today but still got stingy toes, I am now two and a half months down the line and have lost over 2 stone and only about a stone and a half to go until normal weight plus sugars seem to be doing good , any one had the stingy toes thing?

Yes mate.

It was this that sent me to the docs in the first place - or rather it should have done.

I ignored it until it progressed to my fingers to the extent I couldn't fasten my shirt buttons.

Sounds to me like early stages of neuropathy.

Provided you keep on top of your sugars ie below 7.8 it shouldn't get any worse.

It is however unlikely the NHS will be able to improve things any.

Best of luck dealing with it, there is a lot of info on here- I think under the complications page which is well worth a look..

@Rog, as part of your diabetes care plan you are entitled to be seen by a Podiatrist, book an appointment and have them check your feet and see what they think?

sometimes it stings in my right toe... but then i asked my doc and she said that it was common in connection with a low blood sugar. a year ago i was numb in my toe because of exaggerated training. It took almost 4 months before I could feel my toe again. I went to a doc and he said that it was because of my training and not my diabetes. maybe you have been working out a lot, or something else that would affect your toe?

That is interesting maja. I get this when my blood sugars are in the low 4s - just before my liver picks me back up to 5. Mine progresses through stinging toes to stinging soles and palms. I fond that the palms only last a couple of minutes and then it all stops. I do not get it if I drive my bg levels down with exercise as I presume the liver is awake and working. I only get it when I let my bg levels drift down slowly so I expect that the liver, being male and single threaded, is busy working on something else and is just deciding to switch jobs a little late for my feets enjoyment

ah okay! I have in my past had stinging fingers. But only in the tips of my fingers. I never knew what it was and just assumed that it was caused by a nerve or something. it went away in a few hours.. I never saw a connection to my toes before now.
just yesterday i had a stinging toe due to a low bloom sugar.
thank you for sharing!!

have a nice day

I have diabetic neuropathy in my toes. The usual UK prescribed medication (amitryptiline, duloxetine, gabapentin) have proved useless (& terrible side effects).
I take 600mg Alpha Lipoic Acid twice a day, & the pain has all but disappeared. It seems that this natural anti-oxidant is the preferred method of treatment in Germany & independent studies by Linus Pauling institute, University of Maryland confirm its effectiveness.
As a bonus it also helps lower blood sugar levels, as confirmed by my HbA1c test since I started taking this supplement.
WORKS FOR ME!

Wow that's great! i Will remember this in case that i have to take medicin for stinging toes.

@Maja08 please note that this supplement has side effects and interactions with some drugs, so if you plan to try it, please discuss it with your doctor first. All drugs and supplements have pros and cons. Just because one person found the usual prescribed medication to have bad side effects, does not mean you will. For example, I take 10mg of Amitriptyline a day and it works well for my sleep issues, with no bad side effects that I can see. Just because a supplement is "natural" does not mean it will always be effective or safe for you. As with all treatment decisions, do your own reading and check with your doctor.

Hi

Like Newton 45 I also take ALA (im taking 500mg per day though)but I also take Benfotiamine and methyl cobolamine. Early days for me yet but I am convinced they are helping me.

I started after reading a lot of the articles in the"help in dealing with neuropathy" thread in the complications section of the forum.

I would urge anyone who is thinking of trying this approach to go have a read first.

Like Newton I also seem to have seen a reduction in my BG levels and certainly some of my other joint pains are much better, but I can only speak for my own experience.
