STRESS + TYPE 1 DIABETES

hi 95Feb, Stress affects everyone, whether they are diabetic or not. Stress can make blood sugars higher even if the diabetic is eating the same food as normal, it can make you drink more alcohol which can have a negative impact and can reduce your resolve to stay on track with healthy eating. It can make you comfort eat ...

Its tough to say the impact unless I know more about the person experiencing the stress, is it you?

Oh.. right sorry. well there's college work.... im doing one subject but i have different units in them with 5 different teachers so i get alot of work and it has to be in roughly around the same time for all the teachers. with that because i am so busy i dont always do my injections on time.

It might be worth speaking with your teachers and seeing if you can get an extension to give you a bit more time. This hopefully will make things a bit easier.

It is important you remember to take your insulin so a good way to remember is to set an alarm on your mobile phone and if you're like me your phone is normally with you all the time. You could also ask friends and or family to remind you to inject. The other options is perhaps pumping. You still have to remember to check your blood and bolus when eating, but you can programme the pump with all your carb ratios and set alarms reminders which does really help.

Life can be stressful at times for all sorts of different reasons and having diabetes adds to the mix. My husband who has type 1 likens it to having a second job!! I find that speaking to friends and family about things can in most cases be a big help as often people won't realise that you are stressed and under pressure. I'm sure your family and friends will want to do all they can to help. Failing that, your College should have a student counsellor or someone you can talk to about any college or personal issues. Finally, i would speak to your Diabetic nurse who should be able to help you further. Hope things start to improve soon for you.
