struggling to refill my prescription abroad

I’ve been living with type 2 diabetes for a few years and recently relocated to Budapest for work
I didn’t expect something assimple as getting my regular medication to become this complicated.

My GP back in theUK sent me an electronic prescription, properly signed and all, but every pharmacy here refused to accept it. They kept saying they only take the original paper version, and even when I printed it, they said it still wasn’t valid.

It’s a bit worrying as I’m running low on my metformin and not sure how to sort this out without going through a local doctor again or worse, flying back to the UK just for a repeat script.

has anyone else living abroad had the same issue?
and if anyone knows of a safe and reliable online pharmacy that accepts electronic prescriptions and delivers within the EU, I’d really appreciate any recommendations

From the looks of a quick google search Budapest seem to have strict laws on dispensing medication so you’re unlikely to be able to find an online pharmacy that will deliver to you. They also seem very iffy on providing medication if you don’t have a paper script, I think because they don’t have access to our systems they can’t view your e-script even if you do print it it still needs to be looked at and they don’t have access.

A couple of suggestions I’ve read of are to go to pharmacies in tourist areas as they may be more likely to help you or get a “cross-border prescription” from your UK GP. It may be that you’ll need to see a doctor over there in order to get your medication though.

Please ask the GP you have registered with in Hungary to prescribe your medication.

I would be surprised if any EU country would dispense medication using a UK prescription. But perhaps there is someone who can tell me otherwise.

(incidentally, your profile shows your home country as USA, should that be UK?)
