struggling type 1

Hi peeps! I've been type 1 diabetic for 2 years now, and finally at 29 I want to sort my control out. For the past 2 years I would be happy if my blood sugars were below 30 or 20, but for 6 months now I'm trying tighter control, but I am miserable with it. I am hungry all the time, and its not as if I dont eat a good amount. I eat regualr meals and keep it low GI.

Is there any appetite suppressants available that you can buy without prescription. I so wish my doctor would prescribe me metformin, as I know that can keep your weight down by suppressing appetites. Doctors will only prescribe to type 2 diabetics and I'm convinced its for cost reasons.

Any advice much appreciated x

Not sure what to say....what were you eating before, and what are you eating now...how are your bg levels?

If you are hungry...eat more? Are you alos trying to follow a diabetic diet and lose weight? Should be possible...I know lots of people do a low carb diet and lose weight. I am not especially low carb, but lost weight eating smaller meals and following a weight watchers approach...ie, eat what you like, but it is the amount that matters. I was fairly low carb, and wored out my carb insulin ratio and went from there.

Personally, i wouldn't toch an appetite suppresant, or metaformin, unless I needed it for medical reasons. Nothing wrong with metaformin, but if you are not insulin resistant, why take extra meds?

Hi thanks for replying, my BGs are around 5-18 which is really good for me but I want it to get better. Last year I started getting really ill and tired again and found out I had underactive thyroid, and it took ages before I felt better. I'm now on 350mcg of levothyroxime just to get me out of bed. 14 units of levimir in morning and 14 units of levimir at night then novorapid when I eat.

I just want it to be easier, and want to not be thinking of food all the time or worried about exercise. I do exercise, though mentally its someting ive got to get used to with diabetes, i hate hypos, I cant help but panic and binge when I have them. I'm 5ft 5" and 11 and half stone and want to get back down to 9 and half, what I was before I got type 1 diabetes.

Also because I'm hungry all the time I find it hard to sleep some nights becuase all I can think of is food!

Thanks again for reading!

Hi dizzielizzie,

If you have been "off the wagon" for the first two years of your type 1 diabetes then it is going to take you some very concerted effort to focus on your new eating, exercise and dosage routine.

The main thing is to keep trying and know that you are not alone and there are many people on this forum that can help you.

Did you know that smoking can kill you, but people still smoke and poorly controlled diabetes can kill you but people still fall off the wagon. Find something in your life that will give you the motivation to stay on track when the urge to eat and eat confronts you. When I started with this I was an impressionable 16 years old and the thought of having my feet or toes cut off did the trick for me. Once I had overcome the initial rebellion then it became much easier

...but of course your hunger/appetite may be linked to something other than your diabetes which may need further professional input :?:

Thanks for ur messege. I wish my GP would listen, they just say stop eating cr*p and I'll be ok.

Oh well!
