Struggling

Lianne2209

Newbie
I'm a 29 yr old I was diagnosed with type 1 at the age of 27 it was a huge shock to me and iv since struggled a lot to keep my sugars under control being a single working parent I find it hard to eat regular meals and often just snack on things I know I shouldn't! I never ate much before I was diagnosed and have since struggled with making sure I eat properly I like to go to the gym but sometimes have low sugars which I then can't work out as I enjoy high intensity classes! I get real low and depressed about my disease a lot I feel I don't have no one to turn to where feeling like this as most of my family and friends only know a little about type 1 as they only know me with it! And sometimes they get on at me about making sure I eat properly etc and I'm sure they think it's all so simple it can be so frustrating and sometimes I feel like giving up does anyone else ever feel like this?! Is it just me being silly?! Some words of wisdom would be helpful many thanks

Hi @Lianne2209
welcome to the forum

perhaps you could provide a bit more information about the insulin regime you are on.
for example are you taking a background insulin ( lantus or levemir or tresiba) along with fast acting at each meal time ( novorapid or apidra , or novolog ) ?? If so what are your doses ?? Have you learned how to carb count and do you adjust how many units you take depending on what you eat or set amounts at each meal ??

or are you on a mixed insulin ( like mixtard 70/30 ) that you take at certain times each day.

Have you discussed this at all with your DSN ( diabetes specialist nurse ) ?

it can be really frustrating and over the years I have had the feelings you describe ( 43 years type 1 for me )

hi I'm on lantus as a back ground insulin currently upping the dose to 26 units as been waking up with high bg and am on humalog as fast acting insulin the amount I take varies on what I eat if I'm completely honest I guess from trial and error!! Iv Never tried carb counting as I really wouldn't know where to start? I see my diabetes nurse regularly and will be seeing her tomorrow to discuss may be some counselling on how to cope with these feelings I have! Really I just wanted to be reassured I'm not the only one that gets frustrated

trust me you're not !! I am sure a few more lovely peeps will be along today to offer support
perhaps have a look at this for making sure you have your background lantus set right.
it is called basal testing link here http://www.salforddiabetescare.co.uk/index2.php?nav_id=1007

you should ask your nurse tomorrow to be referred to go on a carb counting course ( called DAFNE )
dose adjustment for normal eating.
well worth doing and you will meet other fellow T1's too

all the best !!

thank you you have helped me feel a bit better about this! I will take a look at the link and I am hoping to join a course for carb counting shortly hopefully this will help me manage my feelings towards my diabetes

Hello Lianne2209, it's not just you being silly. Diabetes does mean making a lot of adjustments to the way you live your life and everyone on this forum understands that.

From my experience, blood sugar levels being too high or too low will have an adverse effect on mood, but as you get things under control a bit more, this gets better and you understand a little more why you feel the way you do.

I would say if you can, try to make the effort to eat regular meals instead of just snacking. It's really easy for me to just type that without knowing anything about your circumstances, but I think that and the carb counting course will be a first step to better overall control.

And better control will make you feel better.

Hi. I am Type 2 but on insulin and have the opposite problem to you. I become easily hyperglycemic and get all the **** symptoms and now don't really enjoy eating that much, I am requiring big amounts of insulin and can never seem to get under 7 mmol/l. After even a light meal usually end up 15 mmol/l +. Snacking is out of the question now, just makes me feel ill. I have thought about just giving up but have learned it's a poor option which just makes me ill and a possible hospitalization just around the corner. Stay well.

Hi,
'A visual guide to carbohydrate & Calorie Counting, for people with diabetes', by Chris Cheyette & Yello Balolia. You can buy the book at amazon or get the app on your phone. It makes carb counting easy.
Your definitely not being silly cos sometimes it's just bloody hard.
Take care
Jo
