sugar content?

My boyfriend has been diagnosed this week. We are lost! Is there such a thing as a guide to how much sugar a food item has ie whats low a used all the time or high and to be avoided(choc).
What about carbs? Any help much appreciated. Mainly looking for ideas for packed lunches.
Thanks in advance

Welcome to the Forum. We have a basic information sheet we give to new diabetics which I have quoted below. I hope it helps to answer some of your questions.

As it says in the sheet sugar is carbohydrate so when looking at packaging always look at how much carbs (total) there is in the food, not just the sugar content.

Have a look in the 'Food Forum' for packed lunch ideas.

Hi there

I have been diagnosed for a month and it is very scary, my nurse told me to aim for this

between 40g - 60g of carbs per meal and no more than 15g of carbs as a snack, watch out for some fruits as snacks as they are mega high in carbs and sugar

Blimey that seems a lot of carbs per meal. I know some folks on this site that would think that 60 carbs a day, not per meal was more like it. Now I don't low carb but 180 carbs a day does seem a bit excessive. I aim for 20-30 for breakfast, dinner and no more than 30 at my evening meal, excluding a glass of wine  Have been on this for two years and have a demanding job and 4 grankids, so obviously that works for me. Loads of energy that I didn't have before. The 15 for a snack seems a bit ott too, especially if you have more than one a day.
