summer holidays?

hi,
i am the mother of a 3 yr old girl, diagnosed T1 6 months ago. I'm currently on mat leave with my second child but am thinking ahead to when I return to work next year and we are faced with summer holidays - both my partner and I work full time & can't afford not to...what do people do about childcare for kids with diabetes? Grandparents are an option but aren't that local or confident with the diabetes management, which means staying with them is going to be difficult and I'd be worried about leaving her at playschemes where the supervising adults don't know her and aren't familiar with the condition. Any tips from you guys would be really appreciated.
thanks,
caitlin

this wont help u at all im afraid but i only worked 12 hrs a week in a supermarket so when dylan was diagnosed and we got dla and carer allowance i could afford to take a job in dylans school at lunchtimes so was there when he needed me and had all the same holidays too so my problems were solved.

do u know anyone in ur area with diabetes or has children with diabetes who could help u out or anyone u could train up and would be confident with all the ins and outs??

thanks for replying - I don't know anyone locally who could do this, but something will turn up, I'm sure , or we will have to move so one of us can afford to give up work! it's amazing how much diabetes can affect your life..........

This won't help you either!

I haven't gone back to work since my son was diagnosed. I'm a teacher and I was about to go back on the supply list when Erland was diagnosed at 20 months. I'm also a fitness instructor but I choose my shifts so that my other half is at home when I'm in the gym. My mother-in-law won't check Erland's blood sugar so I can't leave him with her for longer than an hour.

It is hard to find anyone who is confident about looking after a diabetic child but you might be able to find a child minder you trust, who is willing to learn. Do you have a local diabetes group? Would your DSN be prepared to offer training to your child minder?

Good luck

Annette
