With a different illness I notified DVLA of the illness and that I had to take the private health care route as NHS had no funds. Both the hospital and myself thought as I took prompt action to gain control of the illness I would be allowed to continue to drive. DVLA sent me a letter giving 3 days notice of revocation of my licence.

It took me over 12 months to get my licence back, by producing hospital reports that all was well. A friend who also ended up with the same illness a few months after me followed the same procedure and was allowed to keep their licence. Just very strange same illness and DVLA took entirely different approaches.

The DVLA remind me of that joke that was floatng about a few years ago about the difference betwen social services and a pack of rotweilers: wit the rotweilers, you might get your kids back! :twisted:

Was that hypoglycaemic attack at the wheel or elsewhere OP? I belive you need to have more than one, ie 2 hypos requiring assistance before you are not allowed to drive. However, the DVLA seem to make the rules up as they go along, according to whatever the medical officer you are speaking that day wants to do, so I wouldn't expect much logic from them.

If you had an actual seizure, as opposed to just a hypo, that's different I think just one is all that's needed, but I've never heard of a hypo resulting in a seizure before.

Fits or seizures that happen to someone due to hypoglycaemia are caused by the blood glucose level falling extremely low probably below 1mmol. It is the body's way of coping with the severe stress that is placed on it due to rapid drop and no, it doesnt mean at all that someone is epileptic and shouldnt drive.

So you can have one hypo-related seizure and still drive? I'm not sure the DVLA would agree, but then as I said they do make the rules up as they go along.
When I phoned them recently they told me that ALL hypos needed to be 'investigated'.
If that were true then they'd spend all their time investigating diabetic's hypos, as what diabetic on insulin does not have hypos fairly regularly (my hospital told me 1-2 mild hypos a week was normal) , unless they are underinjecting their insulin and running high all the time.
