Well, I am back home after my first holiday as a diabetic! Although I was in a country I know very well, I was going from eating out to party food to party food!! I was initially worried about how to cope and my Bg levels, but thanks to my dear friend I managed to relax and not worry too much.
In fact I tested quite a lot more during those 10 days than I usually do, and the only "high" number I had was 10.1 after two hours - and that was eating a VERY sweet cake covered in real marzipan and chocolate!!! I had dinner out in restaurants twice - once I opted for a Chicken Cecear salat with no crutons (replaced with a little bacon) and the dressing on the side. The other evening we had dinner at a Middle Eastern restaurant with a huge buffet of all sorts of wonderful stuff! And I sure helped myself - I even had a slice of chocolate/coconut cake and after two hours a Bg of 6.2!! Well pleased although it is higher than I usually have.
Private dinners, people have been very good and taken into consideration that I was on a diet, and they made a little something for me - the same as everyone else just without flour and wheat and it was wonderful! Still had birthday cakes, some icecream and my mum's great homebaked bread (which does not raise my Bg level any more than the old Nimble!!) - I even had a little Danish Pastry and I tested and tested, but the highest was 8.2 after 1 hour - of course expect the "marzipan incident" above.
So although my Bg was generally higher than usual, they were not very high by any standards - AM Bg of max 6.2 instead of 5.5 and generally good readings after meals. It learned me a lot about what foods to eat and how they reacted on me. Of course most meals was "washed" down with a beer or a glass of wine - I was on holiday after all! But there is a good time to be had and despite enjoying myself and being "naughty" I doubt it will have a great influence on my next A1c - now I just need to get rid of the 3lb I put on!!!
Tonight more experiment - Shredded Duck is on the menu!!! Oh lord - but it is my favourite meal and it IS my birthday, so this once a year ..........  And what a year it has been ...... who would have thought a year ago that I would be 5st lighter, despite the cirumstances!!
Now off for a walk in the the sunshine, whilst it is here!!
