Hi there i'm nick and this is my first post. I have been having a few symptoms which I have looked up on the internet which points to diabetes, here are a few of my symptoms

* frequent urination - last night I was up 6 times to go to the loo!!
* Increased thirst
* Tiredness
* pins and needles in my hands and feet

I notice that I am hungary all the time and when I do indulge on sweet things a couple of hours later I dont feel too good, as if I have a drunk dizzy, lightheaded feeling.

I went to the doctors today told them my symptoms and tested my urine but there was nothing in it, no indication of a urine infection or glucose in my urine. They told me they were not sure and advised to drink plenty to "flush" anything out if I did have anything and too see them next week if still have concerns.

I am just wondering if it was diabetes would it show up in your urine or not or would a blood test be more accurate, there is no family history either.

Just wanting some advice really what to, would I be better off asking for a blood test instead, or is a urine sample just as accurate?

Many thanks
Nic

Hi Nic,
Sorry to hear you are not feeling so good.
We cannot diagnose here and your symptoms could be indicitave of other conditions. A blood test, Glucose Tolerance Test, will confirm if you are indeed a Type 2 diabetic. The website below explains the procedure and also about diagnosing Type 1.

Hope this helps,

Thanks for the info, much apreciated.

Do you know though whether a negative urine sample indicates no diabetes. I'm only asking so I know whether to insist on a blood test or GTT.

Thanks

Thanks alot, I just assumed that because no glucose was detected in my urine sample then it could not be diabetes, although after I informed the practice nurse of my symptoms she did not seem that concerned and not even mentioned the possibility of diabetes, and that it is prob a chill of the kidneys???? She did say to go back if the symptoms persist.

I am concerned but dont want to waste their time either, how long should I leave it if symptoms do continue?? Would you consider it to be normal to feel "heavy" headed and dizzy after eating as I have just eaten some pasta and i'm getting that feeling again with pins and needles in my hands.......maybe i'm just wierd lol!

Thanks

Hi Nic,
Your surgery is not going to come to you. Make an appointment and express your concerns and ask for a blood test. It is better to know as soon as possible because if it is diabetes then ongoing management will mean that you will begin to feel better. If it turns out that it is not diabetes then they will have to look at other reasons for you feeling as you do.
Hope this helps,
Catherine.

Hi Nick
I would say you need a glucose test and/or a blood test. I was diagnosed with t2 Diabetes last May and my HBA1C was 10. However, I didn't show anything in my urine then and never have whenever I have tested it since, not even when my testing machine showed high bs from a blood sample so I am not sure just how high you have to be to have it show in yr urine. Have you had your Thyroid checked? I don't know about thirst being a symptom but mine is underactive and tiredness, light headedness and pins and needles are symptoms of this and even though I am on Thyroxine I can still get these at times.

If in doubt see the GP again and don't be fobbed off, good lucj.

In must a cases if some-one has untreated diabetes then it is likely that they will show at least some glucose in there urine and may also find some ketones in the urine... Not finding them in the urine wouldn't totally rule out diabetes, but would make it less probable...

A consideration, what sort of amount and type of fluids are you drinking in a day?

Fluids such as Tea and coffee or anything that contains Caffeine can act as a duretic.. My dad who suffered prostrate problems, found the advice given to him by his consultant, no coffee after 6pm (not sure how time was derived at) found it did help to relief symptons over-night for him..
