Hi there,

I have been a T1D for about 14 years now. Admittedly, I haven't been good at caring for it, but I have recently taken control now and my numbers are looking better than before. I don't drink that often, and when I was in uni, I would of course get drunk with my peers, but nothing that occured regularly or even as often as most kids that age do. Everything was fine and I had no problems with it. But now, I have noticed that I get a very sore and upset stomach the day after drinking (even just a glass or two of wine). I was at dinner with a friend last week and she poured a few glasses of wine for people. I stopped after three because I didn't want to get drunk or have a tough bout with a hypo later. I took my insulin as should be and went to bed. But the day after, I experienced a sore, gassy and watery stomach, needing to stay by a bathroom most of the day. This has occured several times, every time I have had alcohol the previous day. Has anyone ever experienced this? I have it every time I drink now, and my doctor says that it isn't anything he has heard of before. I am worried because I don't drink that much or that often, never have...but would like to be able to have a bit on occassions such as weddings, parties and New Year's. Can anyone please help?

Sounds like it could be gastritis or irritation of the lining of the stomach. It might be worthwhile having an endoscopy to check it out. They would also probably test for h. pylori at the same time. I think alcohol can be particularly harsh on the stomach lining, especially if you also have an h. pylori infection (the bacteria that can cause stomach ulcers).

Thanks Indy51!

Do you know if they are chronic or can they be treated? And, does this have anything to do with my T1D?

Cheers x

If you're found to have h. pylori, it is usually treated with a course of antibiotics and cured. Not sure if it's related to your T1D or not - anyone can get it, but if you have a degree of slow transit/gastroparesis going on, possibly it could contribute to the problem. You'd really need to see a gastroenterologist to check it all out.
