I am prediabetic and did buy a meter to test my BG but still very much a novice when I use it as I really don't know which are the foods that raise my BG if there are several different foods on my plate as there would be in a meal
When you first start to test do you have to test every food you eat seperately until you find out which ones raise the BG

I would have the full meal, then if too high see if you can reduce the carbs of that meal. Eat as normal because if you were to try and eat carby meals individually may get false highs as adding things like fats, protein, fibre would slow down the digestion of the carby things, also when in a meal you would have less of it than if eating it by itself.

Agree with brett absolutely. It might be helpful to search online for a list of foods with high, medium and low carb in them. The obvious ones aren't always the culprits though. I can't eat porridge as it causes my BG to spike but some people can. I can have small amounts of potatoes, rice and pasta but most T2's don't seem to be able to tolerate them. It's a totally individual thing and I only found out by testing a lot when I started out.

Good Luck!

maybe eat a low carb meal except for one item, for example eat eggs bacon with toast, then eat it another time without the toast and you will see what difference the bread made, i would strongly advise a food diary with the bgs marked next to the meals, it would be hard to remember otherwise, especially in the beginning, the good news is you will soon have a list of foods that are good for your bgs and then you can just concentrate your efforts on the alternatives.

although we are i agree all different, most folks can and cant tolerate the same foods so if you based your eating on the mainstream good foods then test your way through those and add new stuff to see what happens, its a game ( but its a game like monopoly that you only ever play if you have no choice )
