Testing blood sugar.

Hiya,

In October I was diagnosed type 2 have been on different medications that have made me ill and I've been waiting for 3 weeks for an appointment at the diabetic clinic to discuss another medication, after being sent an appointment for August. (This is a whole other issue I'm having but not what I want to discuss right now)....

My GP has told me that I don't need to be testing my blood. I really don't understand this as how am I supposed to know if any diet changes, etc. I'm making are changing anything? The diabetic clinic at the hospital have said they'd like to keep a close eye on me and monitor me closely and then proceeded to give me a check-up appointment for 7 months down the line. How is that monitoring me closely?

I'm getting sidetracked, the question I want to ask is, should I be testing my blood? And is it going to be worthwhile investing in a meter by myself?

I've read a few different threads here and it seems I'm not alone in feeling like I'm being ignored and "untreated" so to speak. TBH I don't have a clue what I'm doing and I don't know what to do for the best. It's really stressing me out and I'm getting very upset about it all. Nightmare!

your GP needs to be taken outside and shot. :evil:

Yes you do need to test your blood it's the only way you can take control of your blood sugar and find out what's good for you, read through the lo carb diet and success stories posts.
Any questions just ask - someone will advise you.

Dinky the short answer to your question is YES. the point about getting a meter and strips is very much one you will have to try and see with your team. You can often get a free meter but its the strips that push up the cost and some GPs wont issue.

I'd prefer a big sharp knife :wink: The irony is there are 4 doctors at my surgery and he's the best one!

Thanks for that, it's good to know I'm not being unreasonable. If I ever do get to see someone at the diabetic clinic I may mention it to them.

Been for a blood test for something else this morning - and it was a different practice nurse to normal. The regular one wont divulge test results, says I have to see GP. This morning I asked if I had had a hb1c test last year when they told me I was diabetic - yes and the reading was 7.9 I hadn't been informed of this before)
When I had a blood test for something else 3 weeks ago I asked if they could do glucose (first time it had been checked in 9 months.) Diabetes specialist GP gave me the results of everything except glucose a couple of days later. This morning the nurse told me that my glucose measured then was 8.7, which in her opinion was a tad high.(Blood taken at 4pm, 4 hours after a sandwich)
How on earth am I supposed to control my blood sugar levels with diet when neither I nor doc knows what they are??
I have ordered a test kit which should be with me tomorrow. I will record the results and then pay a visit to the surgery and 'discuss' them next week. :evil: :evil:

Finding this site has certainly opened my eyes :shock:

Good plan! See if you can make nice graphs of the numbers. I use this

Hi Dinky

Yes you do need to test!! My Dr told me to do it twice a week, twice a day. More if i am ill or take in extra excercise. Have a look at the NICE guidelines and take them to you Dr. :evil: You need to keep an eye on things as it can lead to other complications. Have a look at www.diabetes.org.uk this was recommended to me by my Dr who has a interest in diabetes. It gave me all the answers to my questions.
