I was diagnosed in February, just before a trip to Australia. Started on Metformin, bad reaction but changed to slow release. I think my initial blood glucose (HbA1C) was 110 (lots of details I was given are a bit fuzzy, panic/stress - have learned to write the numbers down now!); it was 98 when I saw the Diabetes nurse at my local surgery. Off on holiday, worried and trying to follow advice. The diet I was given suggested more carb than I usually ate so I carried on avoiding sugar, white carbs etc. I was aware and careful what I drank. The diagnosis came as part of investigations into my liver function after concerns were raised about test results. I have MS and have been taking Rebif for 8 or 9 years. Good for MS not good for liver! Changed to a different betaintaferon.
Back from travels in April (we missed the snow) and my HbA1C was 87 and I had lost about a stone ! Metformin increased to 2x500mg twice a day and did DESMOND course. I also began to follow this forum. It gave me the confidence to continue what I felt was right about a low carb diet against the advice of all the specialist nurses giving the NHS party line.
Yesterday I had a review with my Diabetes nurse and my HbA1C is now 58 ! Woo hoo! I've lost about another 5 lbs too. My blood pressure is also right down and am thinking I will ask my GP about reducing the drugs I take to control this. I am so pleased that what I am doing with diet is working, my MS means I am rather restricted in how much exercise I can take but I have been trying to do a little more. Next week is my regular update with the neurology departmement and review of my liver function results and MS meds. It's hard sometimes making sense of 2 chronic illnesses. Thanks to the posters on this forum for sharing their knowledge and experience. I'm considering (against all the local NHS advice ) getting a moniter so I can further tweak what I eat based on the results.

Well done!

Good on you not following their advice to the letter, Its what I've always done and ended up worse because of it. Its only this year I have started listening to my body and feeling better because of it (after 23 years!)

Keep going and letting us know how your doing

That's excellent news, Sue! Glad to hear you're doing so well.
