I think the point is that Sid wasn't suggesting a diabetic had more chance of catching flu, but that it could be more serious if they did

I happen to believe with tight control you are no more likely to catch flu, but I can't find the stats to prove it.

Catching flu is bad but not something to get overly worried about, even as a diabetic. I'd really like to see the statistical measurement of flu vaccine side-effects vs increased chance of catching flu (as a diabetic) vs increased complications of catching flu (as a result of being diabetic). Rather than all being lumped together - "you are a diabetic therefore you must have a flu vaccine".
 
Hi all. I would just like to point out some diabetics with an weakend and poor immune system , to catch flu could and can lead to complications like pueumonia and septiceamea it DID with me.
I was done in with keep fighting it and actually lived the reality of these risks. It took me 12 months to get back to normal again.
Sid is absolutely right if a diabetic with poor immune system were to catch flu the risks are increased.
Plus those of us with poor and weakened immune systems are definetely more vunerable to the risk of catching the flu too!

A person with diabetes has a greater susceptibility to infections. They are more likely to get the complications of influenza, like pneumonia. The infection will also affect your blood glucose levels which may go up or down. There are several complications with influenza, such as pneumonia, dehydration, kidney failure and heart failure to mention a few. Not something one should dismiss lightly, even if you haven't had any problems yourself!
 
but that is my point Albert "a person with diabetes" is too vague/general a classification. What I'd like to know is the correlation between diabetic control (HbA1c as a proxy perhaps?) and the "increased" risk of infection/complication.

Example - a person running fairly tight control - how compromised exactly is their immune system? Vs a person running Hb in the teens?

Why don't you ask a qualified medical professional such as an Endocrinologist for the answer you seek. As we are all diabetic's here and not medically qualified maybe you will get a better answer from them?
 

I never rely on any so called 'experts.' I gained much of my knowledge from the previous monitors of this forum, Sue and Ken. They weren't experts but gave out good advice and information. They too didn't rely on 'experts', just those that had good knowledge and listened to what patients had to say. With their help, I too became 'my own expert.'

My experience of the NHS has gone from the sublime to the ridiculous, but there are those 'good guys' out there if you care to look!

The original post gave quite me the prolonged chuckles I must admit.
The subsequent tit-for-tat b@tching and moaning has also made me chuckle, but in a more "well wasn't this predictable" kind of way.

Either way, I've been chuckling quite a bit.
