Theresa May and her "shocking disease"

T1 at her age? Is that even possible? Wouldn't she be a T2, MODY or LADA?

Type 1 can come at any age!

Given all the work the government has put into stigmatise type 2's she can't possibly be type 2

MODY stands for maturity onset diabetes of the young. IUsually strikes in adolescence. Rare after 25.

LADA is subset of T1,.
I say I have LADA, but all my 'documentation' says T1.

Positive or negative portrayal is a double edged sword.

For those diabetics who are able to work then you need a more positive public image of diabetes. Ability not disability, an end to discrimination.

For those of us who are not able to work and facing this governments assault on benefits, the image portrayed is that we can work because people like her do.

Oh how shocking! Is she blind? Is she dealing with Neuropathy? Is she dealing with fatigue or depression? No she's got money and lives in a totally different reality than us peasants.

'Wouldn't wish diabetes on anyone'? I would, when they treat us like ****, its called karma. If the entire government had to live on benefits or deal with daily discrimination. If they had to deal with chronic pain, live in rented accommodation and be a victim of hate crime. If they had to find a reason to keep going, keep living every day, they would soon change their policies.

What’s shocking is that the public don’t know the truth about diabetes, they think its about diet and injecting yourself, oh well. How many people die each year from diabetic complications?
 
I was really annoyed at the headline when I discovered it was diabetes. I think Theresa's comments about it being a shock echoes what we all probably felt on getting our diagnosis, but typical of The Mail to dramatise it into 'shocking'.
However, the positive point is the article will bring out how serious an illness diabetes actually is and raise its profile. Outlining the symptoms Theresa had might make some think twice and consult their GP a little earlier than most of us probably did!

Teresa May is a well know individual, I see two sides to the story. 1. She can now be used to make people aware of the growing disease, and 2 that she's just milking it, thousands of us get diagnosed yearly and we get on with it.

Tbf I can't be honestly bothered with these pumped up media bum holes.

Diabetes shocking ?! I've got it. My wife has end-stage dementia.
Given the choice I know what prefer.
PS - I got diabetes as a result of being a dementia Caror for 10 years.
 
Its the Daily Mail what do you expect.
Certainly not accurate reporting/quoting.

Mac. You nake really good points. David Blunkett was another heralded for overcoming his blindness, never shy of a picture getting on the tube. Yeah right, chauffeur driven limo et al parked round the corner.

He didn't even use a poop a scoop!

Theresa May has my sympathy as I would not wish diabetes on anyone but there are far worse things she could have been diagnosed with. As a Type 1 for 53yrs and knowing the donkey and carrot situation I am in, if Theresa May wants an insulin pump will she have any problems getting one?
 
Theresa May will want for nothing ,While the rest of us will have to beg for test strips or even refused them ,I take Insulin and receive 50 strips a month this is not nearly enough it should be at least 100 test strips
Theresa May will get a personnel diabetes Doctor /manager assigned to her she will have private health care and I cannot see this woman injecting herself she will have an Insulin pump like the rower redgrave and she will easily be able to afford the £800 per year to maintain it
She will have Royal Treatment the same treatment the Royal family receives,She will be treated in a private hospital by a private doctor,I cannot see this woman receiving treatment from the NHS,Theresa May was the one who coined the words The Nasty Party ,The Tory's are still the Nasty Party and their aim is to destroy the NHS ,Large parts of the NHS is now privatised
Lots and Lots of diabetic patients are being refused test strips because of Tory cuts
 
Diabetes should not stop any one from leading a full active life. I am type 1 for over 15 years. It did not affect my career. My job is very demanding and involve long haul travel every month. The key factor of good management is diet and exercise.

If I won the lottery tonight, I'd be ditching the NHS and going private, funding s pump myself too!! If she's luck enough to be able to have these resources why shouldn't she use them. It might bring diabetes into the agenda a bit more now its up close & personal. I'm type 1, and I totally agree that it's a shocking disease when your first exposed to it in your life, I know it was a eye opener to my husband! It's ignorance on the subject of diabetes,that makes the illness shocking!!

Sabantha, nobody is questioning how she spends her money or whether the common man would like to be able to afford better care.

However, her position of influence and wealth has the possibility of her peddling the wrong message. We await stories of how she has overcome the difficulties to lead a normal life. However, many are given poor advice, rationed medication and have so many more issues to deal with...

Hi everyone I need to add that this topic IS about Theresa May and her diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes. If I earned the amount Mrs May does, then I would probably go private myself, because of the inadequate care that seems to be given by the NHS.

Type 1 can be a life threatening condition when diagnosed, but luckily Theresa May wasn't in that frightening position. Maybe Theresa's diagnosis will have a positive affect on diabetes, and not a negative one. From what she has said, she seems level headed and not panicking. She has, after all, got to give her self injections for the rest of her life, it's not reversible, but obviously good control is. I'm sure whatever specialist she is under, he or she will try to give Theresa the best care possible. Pump's aren't given out without careful consideration and it doesn't happen over night. Even if she was given a pump or bought one, Theresa May would still have to get the dosage right, because she is in control of it. My Diabetes doctor said the pump is only as good as the diabetic using it.

Even though she is an MP, she is still a newly diagnosed Type 1 diabetic and coming to terms with the condition, like many other fellow diabetics out there.

Guys, please try to keep the thread on topic, with interesting and non judgemental views on Theresa May. Lets see if there are any positive changes or good information in the coming months, regarding diabetes ,fingers crossed then.

RRB makes a good point and being judgmental about Theresa May and her fortunate financial situation is pointless.
What this does is to give each articulate forum member the opportunity to write to Ms May and their local MP and point out the inadequacies of the current system and how we are affected by it.

We are all in this together and enough voices speaking loudly enough may bring positive change.
