They had it almost right in 1958

Probably speed...I think the late 50's were when they used amphetamines for dieting..

Actually, you are probably right.
My doc gave me something like that in the early 80s when I first went to see them about gaining weight while eating so much less than other people... can't really remember the details, except that they made me feel horrendous (nervous, fluttery, heart racing, like a coffee high x10). never filled the next prescription. Turned out the weight gain was to do with a prolactinoma, so the little yellow/red capsules were a waste of time anyway.

haha! the state those capsules put me in, I would probably have had a heart attack at the flashy lights...

Yeah, I recall the days of school exams in the 60s with slimming pills being obtained for study swatting sessions

They were amphetamines. I was prescribed some and they made me feel amazing, full of energy and raring to get stuck into every and all household chores. I'd clear out a room and start decorating, then I'd notice the bathroom needed attention so I'd start on that, then I would decide to do some batch cooking for my new freezer ....... everything started, but nothing finished.
My husband noticed my new energy and tried one - he only took the one and no more because he drove out of the gate onto the road but didn't straighten up the steering wheel after the turn and kept on turning and ended up in the garden hedge. No damage but it could have been disastrous. I found it funny at the time.
When I finished them I came down like a sack of spuds and felt dreadful, but I did lose weight.
Not a good idea though.

@bulkbiker thank you for posting that. So far I have watched the 1950s pathetic news, which was great and the first of the utube videos which was really informative.
