There is a guy on there at the minute who had T2 - was 23 stone, lost loads of weight and they are saying on there that he is now not diabetic.

:?:

Just seen it to and was saying rude words at the TV! They really made it sound like that if you have type 2 it's your own fault and all you need to do is lose weight

Question to all,,,,,,, is it only over weight people who have diabetes? I am plasterer ... so pretty active,,, but I have it

There are many average weight people with it.

The show was a bit misleading, obviously the huge weight loss gave him excellent control, but I assume that if/when the weight goes back on he will be in the very same position once more.

No, If anything I have been underweight and very active all my life and I was diagnosed with it 2 years ago. Though suspect mine is type 1.5 as I am not insulin resistant. It can happen to anyone it seems.

I think about 80% of type 2's are overweight.

Type 2 can also be inherited and/or age onset. Being overweight however, does play a big role when it comes to type 2 diabetes as your pancreas is effected by the excess fat in your body (specially round the middle) and so doesn't produce enough insolin and when you lose weight, in many cases the insolin production goes on as normal, medication is no longer nesessary, but diet IS..... but no, not all type 2 diabetics are overweight.

I HATE when people act as if all overweight people are lazy slobs who sit around on their behinds and eat all day long. That is in some cases so, but not all do that. In my case I have had an undiagnosed underactive thyroid gland for years, which lead me to gain a lot of weight and my father has age onset type 2 diabetes (he's not overweight) so I could have it because my father has it or because I am overweight... In any case, I don't care why I am diabetic, I just am!!! I now take more care of myself and lose weight with help of my thyroid medication, exercise and diet....

And by the way, my aunty (father's sister) has been overweight all of her life, is in her 60's and doesn't have diabetes at all.... Hmmmmmm Not all overweight people do get diabetes either....

Yes, while it is true that most T2's are overweight (well about 80% ofthem) It is not true that most overwight people are T2.

It seems as if you have to be disposed to get it anyway, even if hou are fat.
