Tired eyes

Since 1994ish my eyesight has steadily diminished but not rapidly. But since 2013 I've noticed increasingly diminished reading ability for periods of time above ten minutes and exponentially worse after that.
After 15 minutes of steady reading I can no longer focus on a line of text without the lines above and below it converging to the line I am trying to read. My only remedy at that point is to rest my eyes for ten to fifteen minutes and try again.
If I repeat this process I manage to eek out another 8 minutes or so and then need another 10 to rest.
This relationship of reading and rest becomes worse with each cycle until it is just simply not worth the effort or I fall asleep whilst resting my eyes.
Is this a typical experience related to diabetes or is this atypical would you say?

It might not be anything to do with diabetes. Have you seen an optometrist about it, and do you get regular diabetes eye tests?

I'm due again to optometrist but the reading glasses he gave me last time were stronger than the time before.
Seems like I'm falling apart at the seams.
 
You may have a progressive presbyopia (long sightedness) that is separate from diabetes. You may have eye changes caused by diabetes. The optometrist does separate tests for visual acuity and diabetic changes, and both are important. In the UK I understand diabetics are meant to have annual diabetic eye checks (someone will correct me if I'm wrong). My understanding is that NZ diabetic eye checks are 2-yearly unless there are problems.
 
My insurance pays for once every two years.
All of my life I've had one eye farsighted and one eye nearsighted. But until about 40 yrs old my brain corrected for the difference and I had 20-20 vision.
If I was reading my left eye did the bulk of the work and if I was shooting long distance then my right eye carried the load.
Reading for extended periods of time in school always have me the headache but never stopped me from reading completely until the last ten years or so, maybe 15
But the last two years have seen major setbacks to my reading time.
And the last six months even more so as described above.
Ten minutes is a maximum without closing my eyes for a bit.
Abd that's with my reading glasses of course.
 
Does your insurance pay for a visual acuity test or a diabetes eye check? If it doesn't pay for the latter, I'd find out what the cost is to self-fund it, personally.
 
I do a lot of crosstitching and recently I have to rest my eyes for fifteen minutes and then I start again.Then a few months ago I found out that I have got early cataracts in both my eyes which is getting me down,as I can't tolerate light and make my eyes very sore, I will have to get my glasses tinted it's that bad.Please go and have it checked out.
 
Have you looked at an amsler grid before? http://www.amd.org/the-amsler-grid/ you could have something very simple like dry eye.
Eyes are very precious so no 1 priority is get things checked with your optician and if not happy ask GP for referral to hospital eye clinic.
 
Trisha my eyes have been very light sensitive this past year also
Bright light (daylight) hurts and lowlight (dusk) I just can't see even when other people are getting along just fine

I'll ask when I go to eye doc

I failed your grid test
Left eye was a big hole above and to the left of target
Right eye there was a big hole left and above target and right and below target.

Is this is trick?

With both eyes open I see a cross in the background passing through the target like the stars and bars flag making a big x of broken lines

Normal?????

With this result, you need to make an appointment to see your Optician asap. Under normal conditions you should see all the lines.
 
No it's not normal and you need an urgent hospital eye apt.
