my husband has had diabetis for 40 years and has most of the horrid complications that comes with it ! he has 5 insulin injections a day and 30+ tablets a day to treat the complications, however he feels unwell most of the time .I was wondering if theres anyone out there that has had diabetis a similar number of years who could let me know if the unwell feelings are normal in a diabetic or it may well be all the medication he is taking

In general I think (and others will surely correct me if I'm wrong) that diabetes, as long as it's well controlled, does not make anyone feel unwell. Uncontrolled diabetes is another story.

Medication of various types, and complications, are also another matter.

What kind of control does your husband have, and what are his complications?

hi thanks for your reply, my husbands control has always been ok but 10 years ago his big toe went numb and it all started from there ! neuropathy ,retinopathy, kidney problems, heart attacks and pancreatitus neverending, hes had all the possible tests and treatments, spending weeks and weeks in hospital only to be told that hes got to live with all this rubbish will have to wait and see what this episode of feeling rotten brings his way

What medications is your husband on? What does he eat? Please cut out all transfats, every scrap of it, replace only with good fats, what are his readings like and does he take any supplements at all?

Has he/have you read the diabetics bible Dr Bernstein Diabetes Solution? Is your husband overweight? And does he exercise?

Sorry for asking all these questions, just that I am trying to see if there are any helpful suggestions that any of us in this forum can come up with.

It is terrible that you two have to live with the fear of 'he is feeling tired and unwell, wondering what the hell is just around the corner' - all this feeling ill and tired could be a side effect of the medication that he is taking, who knows some of them might even clash, medication could deplete vitamins and minerals and any deficiencies there can cause tiredness/feeling unwell too.
In addition I can imagine that he is pretty depressed as well, diabetics are prone to depression as it is and even more so if he is not feeling good at all and worrying about what might be waiting for him around the corner, I bet there have not been too many good news for him.

Thinking of you

My husband too has complications and is often sleepy. i can't motivate him to do anything easily. As to good control, most of us on this forum wouldn't consider what the doctors call good control to be good enough. After all they're happy with HbA1c of7% (it says on the West Berkshire PCT guidelines that 7.4% is considered acceptable).
I have recently managed to gtet my husband to tighten up on his control and reduce his carbs. He's now getting BGs mainly in single figures and seems to have more energy. the specialist calls reducing carbs a (faddy diet) at the same time as commenting on improved blood chemistry.
If your husband has done the DAFNE course, it wouldn't be difficult to try lower carbs. It isn't guaranteed( what is except death and taxes?), but can't do any harm and might help.

hi there thanks for your reply alot of his medication is related to his heart attacks, however he is taking creon which is an enzyme to help break down his food since the pancreatits attacks, so he is careful to what he eats, and there is the strong opiate pain killers to reduce the pain in his legs due to neuropathy I did COMPATIBILITY CHECK ON ALL HIS MEDICATION AND THE RESULT WAS THAT THEY ARE ALL OK TO TAKE WITH EACH OTHER , its just so frustrating not being able to do much for him , the diabetic consultant that has known my husband since he was 9 years old has told him he has been very unlucky with his health , but there is not much more that can be done to help him

hi thanks for your reply my husbands control is usually ok 6.5-8.0 on occasions it has been considerably higher but he remedied that as soon as it occurred, the DAFNE course was considered inappropriate for him due to his other complaints and as to him feeling unwell most of the time His diet is monitered closely due to him taking creon enzymes which help break his food down due to pancreatitis. FRUSTRATION !!!!
