To medicate or not

Hi, I was diagnosed with Type 2 about 2 months ago with BG's of 12 - 16 and joined this forum when I was at a very low ebb. Metformin disagreed violently with me, even the slow release version and diet was not getting it down enough. I soon discovered that even small amounts of carbs pushed the readings up too high. The doctor put me on Gluclazide 80mg twice a day. I got amazing BG results but continued with my new eating plan (self imposed) and soon I was waking up in the morning with readings of 3.7 and feeling shakey etc. I stopped taking the tab at night but continued with the morning dose. Fasting BG then went to 4.1'ish but in the afternoon was down to 3.7 again. I thought perhaps I was ready for diet control only but today it has crept back up to 8.2

I am now not sure whether to take one tablet a day or not and needless to say my doctor is unhelpful and hasn't even referred me to a diabetic clinic or nurse., He just says 'stop hurting yourself and pricking yourself, there is no need to do that' !!!

I have looked at LCHF diets and tried it for a few days - put on 1Kg in less than a week, so it is not for me. I am now eating moderate fat and protein and very low carbs and am feeling good. I only manage to walk once or twice a week due to my working hours.

Any suggestions on how to stop the 3.7's while still staying within the normal range?

Not advising you to change your meds without your Drs opinion, but I had same problem & broke the tablets in half & took 40 mg. Took 1 40 & 1 80 for a couple of weeks & then altered both down to 40. When I next saw the Dr I told him what I had done, said that's fine & changed my script to 40 mg. Just a suggestion huni, based on my personal experience.

Smartie xx

Thanks smartlady - that makes sense. I WILL GIVE IT A TRY. My doctor is not really interested, so I will simply inform him next time I visit.

whilst I would not like to suggest you alter your medication, is there no other GP in the practice you could see?
The one you see seems to be a "bit of a waste of space"
BTW for fine tuning, the 40mg Glic tablet CAN be halved to give a 20mg (far more easily than quartering an 80mg!)

Thanks fergus. We are considering changing to another practice as there is only one doc where we are. As you get older it seems such a big deal to make changes but I will if I have to. I am convinced that with all my reading and this forum, I probably know more about m,y body than he does anyway. I am going to try taking 40g twice a day and see if that has the control i need combined with dietary restrictions.

Hi biltong welcome to the forum. 8.2 is not huge for a fasting BG, mine was 12 when diagnosed. The glucose in your blood comes mainly from carbs so reducing them should help. I think the term LCHF can be a bit misleading. I eat low carb to keep my BG down and ENOUGH fat to maintain or reduce my weight.
