Finally after a lot of suffering I'm getting my tonsils removed next Thursday. Just wanted to know what others recoveries were like? Did you spend long in hospital? When did you finally feel better? Also did it help long term with general health and also diabetes related when you got them taken out? Thanks

I had mine out thirty years ago due to repeated tonsillitis. As I remember I stayed in hospital for a day or two after the operation, until I could eat and drink, then I was sent home with pain killers. It took a few weeks before I could eat anything more solid than scrambled eggs though.

I never had problems since, thankfully, in the years before the op I had tonsillitis six times a year at least.

I got tonsillitis pretty much monthly when I was 14 or 15. Each time I ended up in hospital with blood sugars over 30 and hallucinations. Not fun. Had them out when I was 16 and it made a huge difference. No more hospitalisations since then (22 years). Didn't take long to recover tho a bit sore for a week or 2 die to an infection.

The worst bit was watching all the little kids running around eating toast and crisps 2 hours later while I felt like dying lol

Can't tell I was only 7 OMG that was 60years ago.
I am sure you will be fine. Good luck.

Good luck with that. I had mine out a couple of years ago. It is unpleasant, but was really worth it. My tonsillitis is no more and all those coughs and colds that used to flatten me for days are now just a minor irritation. Unfortunately it took me a long time to recover (about 4 weeks), because I had undiagnosed diabetes at the time and my high BG prevented my throat from healing, it is normally 7-14 days for an adult ( the older you are, the longer the recovery). Words of wisdom: a few post op survival tips:
1) Forget ice cold things, these hurt! Warm water (just above body temp) is the best thing to drink.
2) Don't be fooled by soft-texture food, avoid: ice-lollies (ouch), yogurt/rice pud/custard (sticks to your throat and stings like £$%^), fruit.
3) Best foods: super noodles cooked in plain water were a God-send. When I could eat more solid things, toast with a little butter and warm tea. It sounds horrible, but the toast cleans the scabs from your throat and you really do feel better after eating toast.
4) Painkillers, don't be shy and ask your GP for more if needed.
5) Try and keep BG in check, it will help speed your recovery.
I wish you well, it made a huge difference to my general health.
