Hi,

Just a quick query, hopeful for some advice....

I am travelling over to Washington on Sunday for a fortnight, first big trip since being diagnosed with Type 1 and just thought of the time difference over there.

At the moment, I would usually take my 24 Lantus around 8pm. I was just wondering if when travelling over there, due to time difference... Is it best recommended to keep taking it at the same time I currently will I.e. 3pm over there, or is it best to take it at 8 over there too?

Thanks,

Michael.

Hi Michael,

Since you are going over for a couple weeks it may be easier to try and acclimatize to the time there.

The way I do it when I go over to that part of the world for work is I change my watch as soon as I get on the flight and then take it at my "normal time" but it is adjusted to the time zone where you will be. What you will find it going west you will probably need to add a correction at dinner to cover the short fall with your Lantus running out.

When you come back you will need to be aware that you are essentially overlapping doses a little bit so you will need to watch for Hypos.

I have done it this way with both Lantus and Levemir now without any real issues.

Expect to have a couple of days both going and returning when your levels will seem a little out of whack and you will need to just test a little bit more and be aware of it.

Of course all that said, if you want to keep it at the UK time (which means you will me taking your Lantus at silly o'clock in the morning) you can always do that but I prefer to have the sleep and keep the dose at the time I am used to taking it.

Good luck.

PS: I should mention that this method is what was suggested to me by my DSN, I didn't just decide on my own.

I always keep the time difference between Lantus injections the same, because it lasts for 24 hours. Less chance of messing my BGs up that way.

Hi Michael,

I do the same as Andy when I've been to the US I find that a little easier than keeping to the same times I would do at home.

Have you asked your DSN their advise? I asked mine but she didn't have a clue so I just figured it out myself lol
